Scoring 30 points in a winner-take-all WNBA Finals game to lead the Golden State Valkyries to their first-ever championship in just their second year of existence has put Gabby Williams in the conversation among Bay Area sports legends. But she has yet to fully realize it. One thing she is certainly doing, however, is enjoying every bit of this moment, knowing that it is the kind of achievement that does not come around often.
“No, I’m honestly just kind of living in the moment,” Williams said when asked if the idea of being a Bay Area sports legend had sunk in yet, via Valkyries Beat reporter Kenzo Fukuda.
“I think. I’m not even really thinking that far. I think I’ve just been focusing on my family, my friends, my loved ones, soaking in the moment with them, my teammates. Because I think, unfortunately, we’ll never have exactly this group ever again. So I think I’m just trying to soak in this moment as long as I can with these people.”
Indeed, the performance Williams delivered throughout the Finals, especially in the deciding Game 7, was nothing short of legendary. Across the historic seven-game WNBA Finals series against the Atlanta Dream, she maintained an elite all-around presence, averaging 19.6 points, 3.6 rebounds, 2.7 assists, and 2.6 steals per game.
In fact, she set WNBA Finals records for the most total points (137) and most total steals (18) in a single championship series. And, of course, she went on to win the Finals Most Valuable Player award.
And in that deciding Game 7 specifically, Williams practically single-handedly dragged the Valkyries to victory. After being held to just two points in the first half, she exploded for 28 points in the second half alone, setting the WNBA playoff record for the most points scored in a single half. Her 30-point performance also tied the WNBA record for the most points scored in a winner-take-all Finals game.
And as expected, Williams’ performance has been earning widespread acclaim, especially from NBA stars on the Valkyries’ sister franchise, the Golden State Warriors. Four-time NBA champion and fellow Finals Most Valuable Player Stephen Curry took to Instagram to send a direct celebratory message to Williams and the Valkyries. Draymond Green and Warriors rookie Yaxel Lendeborg, who were actually seated courtside and witnessed the performance live, have also been celebrating her historic achievement.
“Looked just like Steph Curry,” Lendeborg said, referring to Williams’ clutch three-pointers in the game.
Perhaps the most iconic and surprising message of congratulations came from legendary basketball star Michael Jordan himself. According to Williams, the Chicago Bulls legend and six-time NBA Finals Most Valuable Player personally reached out to her via text message to congratulate her on winning the championship and the Finals Most Valuable Player award. Alongside his congratulations, he also left her with a simple message.
“Stay hungry,” he said, to which Williams responded, “I’ve never been hungrier.”
With all of this, it is certainly a peak moment for Williams, and she is savoring every bit of it with her family, friends, and especially her teammates. As she said, it would be quite difficult to have this exact group of players together again, so it is important to cherish the moment together while they still have it.
And Williams’ sentiment is valid to a large extent. There will definitely be some changes to the team roster ahead of next season. That is just the nature of sports, and the Valkyries are no exception. In fact, several players, including Tiffany Hayes, Kayla Thornton, and Cecilia Zandalasini, have contracts coming off the books. So there is no guarantee that all of them will remain with the team, and even if they do, there will definitely be new faces joining the roster.
