The Indiana Fever’s 2025 campaign is the prime example of how injuries can ruin something great. Stephanie White’s team was touted to be a championship contender at the start of the season, but now? They barely scraped their way into the playoffs as the #7 seed and are missing five very crucial players. And this time? There’s no Caitlin Clark to bail them out. As soon as things started stabilizing for the Fever, heading into their first-round matchup against Atlanta on Sunday, the basketball gods decided to smite them once again!

It seems like the injury curse isn’t over for Indiana, as Damiris Dantas, their six-foot-four center, is now in concussion protocol and is unavailable for Game 1 on Sunday, as per Scott Agness. This will cause an interesting conundrum for the Indiana Fever team as Dantas provided them with some much-needed size in the frontcourt, and took on a bigger role after Bibby’s injury.

A lot of fans are asking how Dantas sustained this injury, but the Indiana Fever hasn’t clarified the exact reason just yet. The leading theory amongst fans is that DD had some sort of a collision or fall during practice, leading to a blow to the head.

Luckily, this doesn’t seem to be a long-term issue for the six-foot-four center. It’s more important for her to rest up and be prepared for the home game on September 16th. But now that she’s out, what does it mean for Indiana’s rotations? Who will have to step up in Dantas’ absence in the first game against Atlanta, and how exactly will the frontcourt minutes operate? Let’s take a look.

What does Damiris Dantas’ injury mean for the Indiana Fever ahead of their Atlanta Dream series?

Making the playoffs twice in two years is a big thing for Indiana, but the fans aren’t satisfied with breadcrumbs anymore. But what choice do they have? Injury after injury has crippled the Fever’s chances of being genuine championship contenders this season. So even though the fans can dream, and would love to get their dues after a long lull in the organization’s history, it just doesn’t seem likely this season, not when injuries just won’t leave them alone!

Five players on the injury report (Caitlin Clark, Sophie Cunningham, Chloe Bibby, Aari McDonald, and Sydney Colson) were way too many to begin with, and adding Damiris Dantas on top has complicated things for the Fever. Sure, it’s nowhere near the backcourt meltdown that Indiana had this season, but it’d be wise to get everything in order before the going gets tough again.

So, the big question is: What does this injury mean for the Indiana Fever? Well, to get things straight: Dantas is not a starter. In about 11 minutes per game, she is averaging 4.6 points and 2.4 rebounds. Solid stats, but nowhere near essential for the team, right? Wrong. It’s easy to understate the importance of those 11 minutes as a fan, but imagine what handling this rotation must feel like for Stephanie White.

Suddenly, the Indiana Fever HC has to figure out where to allocate these minutes to get good results for her team. Not to mention, frontcourt minutes can’t go down against a team like Atlanta. Their bigs are dominant and will attack the rim the entire game. So, when they need more center minutes, who can the Fever turn to?

One advice for White would be to emphasize a bigger role for Natasha Howard, and maybe direct a few of those minutes towards the rookie Makayla Timpson. It would be the perfect blend of experience and youth, something that could benefit Indiana against the Atlanta Dream. This first-round matchup is gearing up to be quite interesting, and we can’t wait to see what happens next! As far as we can tell, this injury shouldn’t hamper Indiana’s chances at a crucial game 1 victory. Stay tuned for more updates!
