Just a few days ago, it was all smiles for the Chicago Sky after their impressive 87-81 win over the Minnesota Lynx. But this time, Napheesa Collier and company came in with revenge on their minds, as they dominated the Sky and won the game 91-78. That said, things might’ve played out differently for the Sky if Ariel Atkins and Michaela Onyenwere had been healthy.
Ariel Atkins was the star of the show the last time these two teams met. Her 27 points helped the Sky pull off an upset against the Lynx. But in the reverse fixture, things took a tough turn. While trying to drive hard to the wing to shake off her defender, Courtney Williams, Atkins appeared to tweak something in her leg. Shortly after, the team announced she wouldn’t be returning!
With Courtney Vandersloot already out with an ACL injury, the Sky’s backcourt was already hanging by a thread. So, losing Ariel Atkins was always going to hit the Chicago Sky hard. The team struggled to find rhythm and ultimately fell to the Lynx. But if you thought that was the end of their problems? You were wrong! Michaela Onyenwere was added to the growing list of sidelined Sky players.

With just under three minutes left in the game, Cardoso collided with her Sky teammate Michaela Onyenwere while trying to set a screen, and the result was scary. Michaela went down hard and stayed on the floor after the impact. The entire team rushed over to check on her, clearly concerned. She eventually got up and made her way off the court, but that effectively sealed the result for the Lynx.

Tyler Marsh gives Michaela Onyenwere injury update
Initially slotted into the starting five to cover for Kamilla Cardoso during her international duties, Onyenwere has thrived for Sky lately. The forward has appeared in 20 games this season, averaging 14 minutes per match. She also averages 4.5 points, 1.1 assists, and 1.9 rebounds per game.
It goes without saying that she was influential in the back-to-back wins against the Dallas Wings and Minnesota Lynx, and her absence will be a big loss for the Sky. But how serious is her injury? Coach Marsh has an update that should help ease some of the concerns among fans.

“I think Michaela (Onyenwere) is fine no concussion or anything. Ariel (Atkins) is still being analyzed,” Coach Marsh shared after the game. That update is definitely a relief for Sky fans who were holding their breath about Michaela’s status. Still, with the backcourt already stretched thin, all eyes are now on Ariel’s recovery, as fans hope she won’t be sidelined for long either.
