“I still have hopes for a WNBA opportunity. I want to play at the highest level, whenever possible. I have played EuroLeague, and this next year I will be playing EuroCup in Turkey. I’m just following where the game is taking me, trying to play at the highest level possible and playing the best that I can.” These were the words of Nigerian forward Amy Okonkwo after helping Nigeria win their fifth consecutive FIBA Women’s AfroBasket title. A dream that few get to live is now something Amy will experience this week.
The 6’2″ forward from Fontana, California, has signed a seven-day hardship contract with the Dallas Wings on 20th August 2025, who are dealing with injuries to Li Yueru and JJ Quinerly. Okonkwo was previously part of the Connecticut Sun roster earlier this year, but didn’t make the final cut and hasn’t appeared in the league since. With interest in her growing, let’s take a look at what she will be earning with the Wings.

Even though Amy has spent most of her life in the U.S., her Nigerian roots have always run deep. She chose to represent the Nigerian national team and has already cemented herself as a basketball legend there. With three AfroBasket titles under her belt, two back-to-back MVP awards, and two Olympic appearances with D’Tigresses, Amy has proven time and again that she thrives on the big stage. In the latest AfroBasket, she averaged 14 points and 6 rebounds per game.
Unfortunately for Okonkwo, the wait to play in the WNBA has been long. Ever since going undrafted in 2020, she has played professionally all over the world. She joined the Wings after a strong season with Bourges in France, where she averaged 14.2 points and 5.2 rebounds while shooting nearly 48% from three-point range. Wings have confirmed that Okonkwo is all set to make her WNBA debut against the Seattle Storm on August 22, 2025.
