Whenever we talk about Indiana Hoosiers legends, one name always stands out: Mackenzie Holmes. “Anyone who knows me knows how much I love being a Hoosier,” she once said. Over her five-year career, the graduate student from Gorham, Maine, became one of Bloomington’s most unlikely folk heroes. She finished with a program-record 2,530 points and played a key role in leading Indiana to three Sweet 16 appearances and one Elite Eight. Before Holmes, Indiana had never reached the Sweet 16. Quite the legacy!

That success was expected to carry over when she entered the 2024 WNBA. The Storm selected Holmes with the 26th pick in the 2024 WNBA Draft, however, she sat out the entire WNBA season last year after undergoing a knee procedure.

But fortunes took a turn in February 2025 when the Storm announced they would be signing the forward to a rookie-scale contract after she spent the 2024-25 season as a graduate assistant on Teri Moren’s staff at Indiana. However, as the preseason wrapped up, the Storm decided to waive the 24-year-old. Now, this gives us the perfect opportunity to take a deeper look into her contract with the Storm.

There’s currently no public info available about her personal finances. But if anything changes, we’ll make sure to keep you posted!

What is Mackenzie Holmes’s salary?

For those new to how waivers work, here’s the deal. When a player gets waived, they go on a 48-hour waiver period. During that time, any team in the league can claim them. But there’s a catch: if a team does claim the player, they have to take on the entire contract as is. No changes. No negotiations. That’s why most waived players don’t get picked up right away. If no team claims them in those 48 hours, the player officially clears waivers. From there? They’re a free agent—free to sign with any team, on any terms.

Holmes was set to make $66,079 with the Storm this season, as noted earlier. But that deal is now void. Still, there’s a sense of hope around her. Many in the community believe she’ll find a new home in the league. Where? That part’s still up in the air.

Why were Mackenzie Holmes’s contracts waived?

There are only 156 roster spots in the entire WNBA. Just 13 teams. Each allowed a minimum of 11 and a maximum of 12 players. So yeah, spots are really hard to come by. And unlike the NBA, there’s no G League to work your way up through. No safety net. That makes things even tougher for rookies like Mackenzie Holmes, especially since she already missed a season due to injury.

A Look at Mackenzie Holmes’s College and Professional Career

Holmes had a phenomenal run with the Hoosiers during her five-year stay. She left Bloomington as the program’s all-time leading scorer with 2,530 points. She also topped the charts in field goals made (1,043), field goal percentage (63.9%), and total wins (123). But it doesn’t stop there. She ranks in the top five in seven more categories—second in blocks (258) and games played (147), third in double-doubles (26) and points per game (17.2), fourth in rebounds (990) and free throws attempted (595), and fifth in free throws made (434).

She became Indiana’s first-ever First Team All-American, recognized by the AP, USBWA, and WBCA. In total, she was named an All-American eight times. And don’t forget her impact in the big dance— three Sweet 16 appearances and one Elite Eight. No doubt about the fact that she walked away as one of the greatest players, if not the greatest, in Hoosiers’ history.

But so far, her pro journey hasn’t quite matched the highs of her college career. After sitting out the entire 2024 WNBA season, Holmes finally suited up for the Seattle Storm in a preseason matchup against the Connecticut Sun. She made the most of her 21 minutes on the floor, going 4-for-5 from the field in an efficient outing. A solid showing, no doubt. But sadly, that remains the only professional game she’s played to date.
