Sydney Colson’s College and Professional Career

College Career

Coming out of high school, Sydney Colson was a heavily recruited prospect. According to most agencies, she was listed as the 29th overall and the 8th best guard prospect in her 2007 class. The hype around her was so much that Hall of Fame coach Gary Blair personally recruited her for Texas A&M University. Sydney passed over offers from prestigious basketball programs like LSU and Oklahoma to commit to Texas A&M.

In her freshman year, she was the backup point guard to A’Quonesia Franklin and had a limited role. Throughout the season, she only played 10.9 minutes per game and averaged 3.2 points per game. However, her solid play from the bench helped lead Texas to its first Elite Eight appearance. Her sophomore year was dealt a major blow when she suffered an ACL injury during a pickup game. However, in a miraculous recovery, she returned just 4 months after the injury, and she made her comeback.

Sydney Colson’s most productive year in college basketball came as a senior. Co-captaining the team with Sydney Carter, she led them to their first-ever NCAA championship in the 2011 March Madness tournament. Coming in clutch during the semifinals, she assisted the game-winning bucket made by Tyra White. Her senior season was capped off by an All-Big 12 Honorable Mention and finished fourth in assists and fifth in steals in Texas A&M’s program history.

Professional Career

Boosted by her credentials as an NCAA championship-winning captain, many might have expected Sydney Colson to be among the first few picks in the 2011 WNBA draft. However, she had to wait until the second round for her name to be called. However, this tricky situation continued as she was traded by the Connecticut Sun on the same night to the New York Liberty. She played sparingly for the Liberty and was waived after the 2012 preseason.

After that, Sydney had to endure a three-year gap without WNBA basketball. During this time, she played overseas basketball in the Polish professional league for Lider Pruszków. However, on May 15, 2015, the San Antonio Stars signed her to a training camp deal for the 2015 season. Sydney Colson cashed in this second chance, and that led to her three-year stint with the San Antonio Stars. During the 2016 season, she managed to have the best year of her career so far. She scored 5.1 points and 2.6 assists per game.

After three seasons with the San Antonio, Sydney spent a year playing for the Minnesota Lynx. However, her next two years were again spent away from the league as she played overseas in Israel and then Poland. She made her return to the WNBA with the Las Vegas Aces for the 2019 season. In the shortened 2020 WNBA season, Sydney Colson signed with the Chicago Sky. Following a short stint playing for the Athletes Unlimited, Sydney Colson returned to the Las Vegas Aces in 2022.

Sydney Colson finally got a long, consistent role with the Aces. During her tenure with the Aces from 2022-2024, Sydney won back-to-back WNBA championships in 2022 and 2023. During what was one of the most successful years of her career, she won both the WNBA championship and the Commissioner’s Cup. However, after three successful seasons with the Aces, she joined the Indiana Fever in the 2025 offseason.

After Caitlin Clark’s right groin injury against the Connecticut Sun, Sydney Colson had an extended role to play. However, that role didn’t last for long, as during a game against the Phoenix Mercury, she suffered an ACL tear. Shortly after, the team announced that she would miss the remainder of the season.

With Sydney Colson set to hit ‌free agency again next year, it will be interesting to see if the Indiana Fever brings her back. Yes, her numbers are not very explosive. But you can’t quantify the experience and championship know-how she has.
