At 32, Julie Vanloo has become more than just a point guard for the Golden State Valkyries—she’s the team’s quiet connector. With players hailing from seven different countries, the locker room is a blend of accents, cultures, and expressions. And Vanloo, fluent in four languages, could sometimes translate jokes for her teammates.

It’s only Vanloo’s second year in the WNBA. After years of grinding it out on international courts, she finally got her shot with the Washington Mystics last season. She made the most of it, starting 34 of the 40 games she played, averaging 7.4 points and 4.3 assists. But the Mystics lost her in the expansion draft, and the Golden State Valkyries gained a gem.

Yet, building a brand-new team is never easy. Forging chemistry takes time, and when your roster speaks a mix of languages, that challenge multiplies. On the court, a missed call can mean a missed play. Off the court, it can mean missed connections. But Vanloo has made it easier, even though she herself is not an American. Let’s understand more about her childhood and her parents.
