Kierstan Bell has always had it in her. Back in Ohio, she carved her name in history as only the second player, after LeBron James, to be crowned the state’s Ms. or Mr. Basketball three times. She carried that same fire into college, piling up over 1,500 points before stepping onto the W. But the pros have been a different kind of grind. From draft night highs to lineup struggles and the battle to prove she belongs, Bell has packed it all into just three years, and she’s still pushing. Yet, as much as this journey is hers, there’s someone else who’s shared in the ride!

Kierstan was born to Perry Bell and Amanda Hubbs in 2000. Much of her basketball excellence is undoubtedly credited to her parents. At every step, it was either her mother or father helping her. Kierstan Bell’s Relationship With Her Parents

Ever since the beginning, Bell’s parents have helped shape her basketball journey. At first, it was her mother who kept motivating her, and despite being more of a non-athletic person, she always respected Bell’s basketball career. But her relationship with her father is something that can’t be explained with words.

It’s because he had always been in her genes, yet she got to meet him after 20 years when he was released from prison. But the meeting was limited, and in January 2025, she lost her father. What made the situation even worse was the timing — it was shortly after losing her childhood friend in late 2024 and before losing her uncle in April.

This unimaginable grief of losing three close people was enough to break her. “What am I doing wrong? Why is life so hard?” she would ask her mom, questioning not only her place in the WNBA but whether she even wanted to keep playing. Yet, if she’s been able to pick herself up, it’s particularly due to the influence of her parents.

Yes, a bit of it goes to her new on-court family, too. As she puts it herself in an interview with Andscape.com, “They just kept reminding me, like, ‘Yes, life is hard, but lean on us. Lean on this organization. As Coach said, lean on your teammates.’” But it was her parents she often mirrors. She mirrors her father in her own energy. “If you see me as a goofy person who’s always full of energy, who’s always dancing and laughing, I said, ‘That’s literally him.’” she recalled.

From denying ketchup at a restaurant to savoring root beer at a soda fountain, she’s now always connected to him in the ways she had longed for. So yes, that is how her father and mother helped shape her into something she wished to be.
