Sydney Colson’s journey in the WNBA has been nothing short of a roller coaster ride. Even her draft night had a twist —she was traded the same night she was drafted. Then in her rookie year, the guard had very few opportunities to showcase her talent and was unfortunately waived just after the pre-season of her sophomore year in the league. Despite facing tough odds, numerous cuts, and almost five years of her career spent playing overseas, she has never given up.

The result of her resilience is nothing short of extraordinary, with 2 WNBA championships, 2 Commissioner’s Cups, and a respect around the league as a valued veteran guard. Sydney’s journey to this stature in the WNBA started long before in Houston, Texas, where her parents played a good part in shaping her grit and work ethic. Here’s a little about the two.

Who is Sydney Colson’s Father?

Sydney Colson’s father is Simmie Colson. Ever since her childhood, Simmie was one of the biggest supporters of her dream to play professional basketball. It was in Texas that she discovered her love for basketball and followed the now-defunct WNBA powerhouse, the Houston Comets. It’s safe to say she wasn’t the only one in the Colson household who closely followed women’s basketball.

Simmie Colson was himself a basketball coach when he noticed there wasn’t attention towards Texas players by National evaluators. So after the now-Fever guard had graduated from high school, he became the first person to cover Texas on a national level through Scout.com and Fullcourt.com. Eventually, Simmie went solo with his own blog, helping ” over 1000 players reach their next level dreams.” Currently, he is a lead scout at Prep Girls Hoop.

But also more importantly, the father of 3 successfully defeated prostate cancer in 2025. “Happy Father’s Day to my dad! Rang the bell about a week ago and [defeated] prostate cancer so this Father’s Day is even more special than before! ” Sydney Colson had shared.

Even as he fought the battle, Simmie also appeared as the national evaluator at the Shooting 4 Da Cure — a breast cancer awareness basketball tournament. He continues to help the ones in the shadows and proudly highlights the journey of his daughter as an NCAA and a WNBA champion.

Who is Sydney Colson’s Mother?

Nothing much is known about Sydney Colson’s mother, Stephanie Colson. However, she is often spotted alongside the Fever guard on TikToks and in the stands as her daughter plays on. She was the 2022 finals, sure that the Aces and her daughter would take the title and she was there when Sydney began a new chapter in Indiana.

When the veteran guard’s sister posted, “Who’s ready for the season to start?! Let’s gooo!! 🔥🔥 @indianafever @sydjcolson” earlier in 2025, Stephanie was one of the firsts to raise her hand up. The mother of three might not be on camera as much, but her efforts behind the scenes has been evident.

What is Sydney Colson’s Parents’ Nationality?

Sydney Colson’s parents, Simmie and Stephanie Colson, are American by nationality. They settled in Houston, Texas, and raised their family of five — 3 daughters, Sydney, Simone, and Simmie IV — right there. And as aforementioned, the father is a national evaluator with NCAA Certified Scouting Service as well as a Recruiting service.

The Colsons are a close-knit family, often showing up in support, and for Sydney, it is about giving back; “make my parents proud,” she says.
