After trying her hands in a diverse corporate space for three years, she returned to the hardwood. As a coach this time. In 1999, Carolyn Peck made history as the first African-American woman to win an NCAA Women’s Basketball Championship as head coach of Purdue. She even won the Winged Foot Award from the New York Athletic Club, writing history as the first African-American to receive the honor. She even went on to coach the professional women’s team, Orlando Miracle between 1999-2001 and successfully led them into the 2000 playoffs.

Moreover, Peck oversaw the University of Florida’s greatest one-season turnaround during the 2003-04 season. The Gators ended the season with a remarkable 19–11 record as compared to the previous season’s record of 9-19. And the team started faring better results with Peck. They clinched a 21-7 record and became the 6th ranked team in the league’s standings in 2005-06.

What did Carolyn Peck say about Caitlin Clark’s absence from the Indiana Fever lineup?

On July 3, 2025, Peck told SportsCenter that the Indiana Fever looked even more dangerous without Caitlin Clark. “I think that Indiana is even more dangerous when Caitlin Clark doesn’t play,” Peck said. “Because she’s a ball-dominant guard. The ball is in her hands a lot, so you know what you need to try to take away. But when you look at Indiana now, they’ve got so many weapons.”

Describing Clark as a “ball-dominant guard,” Peck implied that the opponents focus easily on the reigning Rookie of the Year. Besides, the team would heavily rely on Clark for possessions, creating offences, and setting the pace for the team. But her recent injury turned into a boon in disguise for the roster. Not only did each player get a chance to represent the locker room, but they also played to their strengths and clinched a remarkable Commissioner’s Cup victory without Clark.

When you have a point guard like Kelsey Mitchell and Aari McDonald making plays on the perimeter and a post like Aliyah Boston, I’m gonna tell you: Indiana, they are a threat. And it’s specifically on the defensive end,” Peck added. She praised Mitchell, McDonald, and Boston for stepping up in Clark’s absence and rallying the team on their shoulders. Also, she emphasized that the Indiana Fever has transformed into a threat for the opponents without the star player. Thanks to their spotless defenses, Peck remarked the team as a ‘threat’ on the hardwood.

How did Carolyn Peck’s comments reflect Indiana Fever’s recent success without Caitlin Clark?

The Indiana Fever managed to secure two consecutive and dominating wins over the Minnesota Lynx and the Las Vegas Aces. Their championship run left the league stunned, as they ousted the best defensive team in the league by a huge 74–59 margin. Clearly, the roster worked on its shortcomings and shifted its strategies in Clark’s absence.

On the other hand, the team also clinches another win. This time, they defeated the Las Vegas Aces by 81–54. These scores are massive, especially when Clark is absent from the paint. Peck’s recent comment highlighted the team’s versatility and balance, when they know that they can no longer solely rely on Clark to make the shots.

Needless to say, the team will be unstoppable once the formidable force in Caitlin Clark rejoins the roster. As Indiana Fever sails through the regular season games, this domineering attitude is a sure shot way of propelling the franchise towards the aspirational title victory this season.
