Not many athletes get to pull up to a press conference with four Olympic gold medals, but Lisa Leslie did exactly that back in 2008 after leading Team USA to victory over Australia in the Beijing Olympics final. “I put this uniform on when I was in the 11th grade and I worked my way up to the national team, then the world championship, then the Olympics,” she said, standing tall in that moment. “My dream was to hang four gold medals around my neck by the time I finished the Olympics here.”

Just a year later, Leslie announced she was stepping away from the game after a legendary 12-year run in the WNBA. Two championships, three MVPs, and eight All-Star nods later, the 6’5” LA Sparks icon had built a résumé that’s impossible to ignore. When you’re talking about the greatest to ever do it, Lisa Leslie’s name has to be on that list. She wrapped up her WNBA career with 6,263 points and 3,307 rebounds—both standing as league records at the time.

Throughout her incredible journey, Lisa Leslie has always had one constant by her side—her husband. “As far as the love of my life, well, Michael’s love for me has taught me the difference between having a man in your life versus a boy, and I couldn’t be happier for that lesson and his love,” Leslie once shared. So, who is the man behind the WNBA icon? Let’s take a closer look!

How did Lisa Leslie and Michael Lockwood meet? When did they get married?

Back in November 2006, WNBA icon Lisa Leslie married Michael Lockwood in a beautiful ceremony in Maui attended by 85 guests. Their love story? It started with a random airport encounter. While on vacation, Leslie met a man who turned out to be a friend of Michael’s. “He told me him and his wife were fans and then said, ‘Hey, I have a great guy you should meet—you’re both tall,’” Leslie recalled with a laugh. “I’m thinking, ‘I’m not trying to meet anyone; I’m good single,’ but I finally gave in and shared my number with him to give to Michael, and the rest is history.”

The pair began dating in 2005, and it didn’t take long before Michael popped the question. He proposed right after the NCAA Women’s Final Four on April 4, 2005, in Indianapolis—an event where Leslie was working as a commentator. “I had no idea even after seeing the message on the bed in our hotel room that he was about to propose,” Leslie said. “I just thought, ‘Awww, how sweet!’ But when he did get on bended knee I was so corny and like, ‘Oh yes, yes, yes.’”
