Nate Tibbetts, son of Fred Tibbetts, a girls’ high school basketball coach, had always been interested in basketball. But it was in 2001, he started following his father’s footsteps. At first, he became an assistant at the University of Sioux Falls, and then moved to the NBA G League. Even so, he wasn’t done making strides. So, he once again made a shift in October 2023 and was named the head coach for the Phoenix Mercury.

It was his first role in W, and he made an impact with it. With his notable NBA background, he reportedly became the highest-paid coach in W’s history with a contract exceeding $1 million annually. Since then, he has been working day in and day out, training Mercury. And throughout, his wife has been beside him.

What Is Lyndsey Tibbetts’s Family Background?

Lyndsey Tibbetts, wife of Phoenix Mercury head coach, grew up in South Dakota and went to Sioux Falls Christian High School. From a young age, she had a strong interest in both education and sports. So, after high school, she decided to attend the University of Sioux Falls. There, she took a role as a senior intern in the athletic department. It gave her a closer look at how sports programs work behind the scenes.

Even though her husband is often in the spotlight, Lyndsey prefers to stay more private. She focuses on family and supports Nate in his coaching journey. She plays a quiet but important role in keeping things balanced at home while still staying connected to the sports world she’s always loved.

How Did Lyndsey and Nate Tibbetts Meet?

The couple met when Lyndsey was working as an intern and Nate was working as an assistant for Shane Murphy at USF. Funnily enough, the Athletic director, Willie Sanchez, had directed her that dating anyone from the basketball program was not encouraged. Reflecting on that, Lyndsey once shared, “We’d been dating seven or eight months and everyone knew we were a couple, other than Willie…it was after the last game of the season and Nate, Shane and Willie went out and had a few beers. I called Nate and he hands the phone to Willie. So I’m thinking I’m going to talk to Nate and Willie answers. I almost killed Nate after that one.

Over the years, they’ve built a strong bond, standing by each other’s side through the highs and lows of their respective careers. Together, they’ve not only supported each other’s passions but also created a loving home for their family.

Deep down probably I am, that’s how I came up. I want to live up to my dad’s legacy and take pride in that because I saw him take a lot of pride in coaching girls and not coaching them any different than if he was coaching our (boys) team.” The twins’ presence must reinforce his connection to coaching women, working well for his WNBA role.
