Hours after Arike Ogunbowale helped Mist BC win the Unrivaled Basketball 2nd season, the WNBA star found herself in police custody, posing for a mugshot. Police have shared further details on the incident involving the 29-year-old’s arrest.
Ogunbowale plays in the WNBA for the Dallas Wings and has been committed to the Dallas franchise since the Dallas Wings drafted her as the fifth pick in 2019. Ogunbowale scored 19 points in Mist BC’s six-point win over Phantom BC to claim the Unrivaled Championship.
Celebrations were in order at the Miami nightclub E11EVEN early Thursday morning. The nightclub was the designated official afterparty host for Unrivaled.
What Happened at the Miami Nightclub Before the Arrest?
Arike Ogunbowale partied with other Unrivaled players at E11EVEN, with Instagram stories capturing her enjoying the celebrations. The 29-year-old was allegedly involved in an altercation in the club, which forced the club’s security guard to escort the WNBA star out of the nightclub.
During the attempt to escort her out at 4:20 AM on an early Thursday morning, Ogunbowale reportedly punched the security guard, leading to her arrest 2 minutes after the incident.
What Do Police Say About the Altercation?
Police have charged Ogunbowale with first-degree misdemeanor battery, alleging that the 29-year-old punched the security guard in the face.
Was Arike Ogunbowale Released After the Arrest?
Police took the seasoned Dallas Wings star into custody, with the 29-year-old posing for mugshots, according to Miami-Dade County records. The police released Ogunbowale on a $1,000 bond, and she is back ‘home safely’ as per an Unrivaled spokesperson.
What Have the Dallas Wings and the Unrivaled League Said About the Incident?
While the official Dallas Wings X handle hasn’t tweeted anything, Alexa Philippou has revealed a statement from the WNBA franchise.
“The Wings are aware of an incident involving Arike Ogunbowale and are in the process of gathering more information. Further comments will be provided once we have more details.”
Kendra Andrews provided an update from Unrivaled, with the league’s statement strikingly similar to what Dallas said.
“The league is aware of an incident involving Arike Ogunbowale, and we are in the process of gathering additional information. We’re in contact with Arike and her representatives.”
An Unrivaled spokesperson also informed people about Ogunbowale’s release on a $1,000 bond, which seems to confirm the continued communication between the league and the 29-year-old.
What Does This Mean for Ogunbowale’s WNBA Future?
Arike Ogunbowale’s 3-year supermax contract with the Dallas Wings culminated with the 2025 season, with the 29-year-old set to enter Free Agency. Having amassed almost 4,500 points for Dallas, Ogunbowale remains a core part of the Wings roster. Dallas is expected to negotiate an extension with Ogunbowale as they build around 2025 Rookie of the Year, Paige Bueckers.
However, should the 29-year-old be charged with a serious offense as part of the proceedings that will take place, it could force Dallas to look past the 29-year-old, especially if the Wings select Azzi Fudd in the upcoming WNBA Draft, which would complete a backcourt reunion of the UConn duo of Fudd and Bueckers.
She could become a great option for the two new franchises, Portland and Toronto. However, with new CBA terms likely to allow teams to sign only one player to a supermax deal, her ability to attract the same deal she had in Dallas would come into question.
