When the Dallas Wings won the draft lottery for the No. 1 overall pick, GM Curt Miller lost his mind. It was only days after he was hired, and he knew the chance he was going to get in only his first year. “I absolutely lost my mind. … We knew what that meant at that moment,” the GM said, describing the moment. Fast-forward to now, and Paige Bueckers is validating every bit of that excitement. Naturally, the Wings’ social media team jumped at the chance to celebrate their new star, dropping a tweet that’s left fans asking, “has the social media team lost it too?”.

In just her second game, the Dallas Wings’ No.1 pick delivered a performance that showed why she’s already drawing comparisons to league greats. Although the Wings fell 79–71, Bueckers stood tall. She put up 19 points on 7-of-14 shooting, handed out 8 assists, grabbed 5 rebounds, and contributed a block plus 2 steals — a full-court effort that kept the team fighting till the final buzzer.

And she started it all off with a dazzling full-court assist to NaLyssa Smith — a QB-level pass that led the Wings’ official account to draw a comparison. You might think they must have called her the next Taurasi, or Kyrie Irving, or Jalen Brunson. But nope. “Paige Mahomes to Lyss Jett Jefferson omggg what theeeee.” Yeah,  Patrick Mahomes!

Yes, it was a breakout moment — with veterans Arike Ogunbowale and DiJonai Carrington shooting a combined 4-of-23, Paige Bueckers carried the rhythm with 11 first-half points — but not all fans were thrilled, especially with the Mahomes comparison!

Why? Because Mahomes, Texas-born but Kansas City’s pride, isn’t exactly Dallas’s hometown hero. Dallas fans bleed Cowboys, and a Texan winning for the Kansas City Chiefs isn’t exactly their pride.

Fans Mad at Wings Social Media admin for Bueckers comparison with Mahomes

So when one fan fired off, “We rock with Hurts here, not Mahomes,” — it wasn’t just a jab.
It was a statement. In Dallas, hero worship has a zip code. Some fans don’t just snub Mahomes — they salute the guy who beat him in Super Bowl LIX. In Dallas, Jalen Hurts isn’t just a rival. He’s a folk hero. A walking reminder that some Texans would rather back the QB who handed Mahomes an L than celebrate one of their own. So when someone compares such a star with the Wings rising young phenom, it’s grounds for criticism in Dallas.

One fan said, “First miss of the season, admin.”
Yeah, pretty much a full-season fumble. Wrong name. Wrong town. How did the social media team not know that the Dallas fan base has been so tight for years that it earned them the name “America’s Team?” Furthermore, the 2025 season schedule makes this even more embarrassing. This year, the NFL has given the Chiefs seven prime-time games — the most in the league, including Dallas. And with them both being powerhouses, the NFL vice president issued a bold statement that fanned the flames more. “The Chiefs have almost kind of surpassed the Cowboys as the bell cow,” he said. “This is what happens when your pop culture is part of the fabric of the country right now.

One fan said, “Eww not Mahomes.”

Funny thing is, Mahomes is Texas-made. You’d think Dallas would show more love. But Jerry Jones fumbled that one — and fans sure haven’t forgotten. The pain only gets sharper when Mahomes says things like, “I would’ve loved to play for the Cowboys,” rubbing salt in an old wound. That kind of almost-history cuts deep in the Lone Star psyche. Also, coming back to Hurts here, he also has strong ties to Texas, so the team could have easily avoided this blunder. A Houston native, Hurts attended Channelview High School, where he established himself as a dual-threat quarterback, and it is Texas’ legacy that shaped his distinguished place in the NBA.

And how can we forget that after Dallas basically handed Luka to the Lakers, folks aren’t looking to jinx Paige and the Wings. Right now, the city’s holding its heroes close — no more near misses.

Another fan said, “Not Mahomes, any other player man.”
And yet, Mahomes keeps showing love to his home state:
— Through his 15 and the Mahomies Foundation, he’s pushed health and education programs across Texas.
— He trains in Dallas in the offseason, bringing NFL heat to local fields.
— He’s a regular at Mavs games, especially when Luka was around.
— And in 2024, he dropped $5 million on Texas Tech to fund new football facilities.

Sure, he suits up for Kansas City. But his roots — and his generosity — still run through Texas soil. Just… maybe not through Dallas hearts.

One fan said, “DELETE.”
And that about sums it up. Texan loyalties don’t just run deep — they run selective. As Mahomes once admitted: “I was a Cowboys fan growing up… I used to hate the Patriots.” Now? Some folks in Dallas feel the same way about him.
