Many stories have been circling around Brittney’s absence in the WNBA season 2022. While she pleaded guilty of breaking the Russian law, it was not her intention. Apparently, Griner flew off to Moscow back in February 2022 to play for their local team UMMC Ekaterinburg. However, she was arrested at the Moscow airport under the charges of carrying illegal compounds. Notably, she was carrying a cartridge with a small amount of cannabis oil which is not allowed in Russia. Unknowingly, she broke the law. Consequently, the Russian court sentenced her to 9 years of jail time in a penal colony.

The US government finally persuaded them to release her. However, it came with the price of a high-profile prisoner exchange. Allegedly, the prisoner was the Russian arms dealer Viktor Bout aka “Merchant of Death.” He completed 12 years of his 25 years imprisonment in the USA on the charges of arms dealing to various terrorist groups.
