It takes a lot for Breanna Stewart to show visible frustration during a game. The Liberty star is known for keeping her emotions in check, regardless of the situation. But Saturday night’s matchup against the Indiana Fever appeared to test even her patience.

In a video clip shared by the fan account “useyourlegs” on X, Stewart could be seen visibly frustrated on the bench. The Liberty star appeared to be engaged in a heated discussion with Andrew Wade, New York’s director of player development, as emotions ran high during the game.
As the broadcasters noted during the telecast, she seemed to be trying to energize the team and help identify adjustments. One commentator even pointed to her basketball IQ, saying, “Stewie has a high IQ. She’s probably telling coaches what she’s seeing and what they need to change.”
I’ve never seen her scream in all the years I’ve watched her more than she has in just these first 11 games this year like oof 😭 pic.twitter.com/uuRw2DcbjN

Whether the broadcasters were right about what Breanna Stewart was saying in that moment is open to interpretation. But given the way the game was unfolding, their assessment made plenty of sense.
Up until the second half, the Liberty were struggling to cope with Indiana’s pressure. They trailed 40-37 at halftime while shooting below 40% from the field and connecting on just 2 of their 14 attempts from beyond the arc. Things only got worse in the third quarter, when New York found itself staring at a 57-45 deficit at one point. Given the circumstances, it was hardly surprising to see frustration begin to show.
As it turns out, Stewart’s emotions had been bubbling to the surface long before that bench exchange caught everyone’s attention. According to Satou Sabally, she also challenged the team during halftime. “Stewie challenged us at halftime just to be the aggressor in this game and not let them dictate us,” Sabally said. Head Coach Chris DeMarco also confirmed it, “Sometimes you just have to manufacture some aggressiveness and energy, and I thought we found a way to do that late third.”
Breanna Stewart didn’t sugarcoat what she told her teammates at halftime of the Liberty’s comeback victory. Speaking at the postgame press conference, she was direct about the message she delivered in that locker room. “My message was we needed to wake up,” she said.
What frustrated her most was the poor execution when it came to shooting. “Listen, we didn’t shoot the ball well. F— it, honestly,” said Stewart per ESPN. “We want to win games whether they’re pretty or they’re ugly, and that’s what’s going to be the separator down the line, is who can get the win when things aren’t going your way, when things aren’t going well, and we continue to fight back.”
That aggressiveness ultimately paid off. After spending much of the night trailing and struggling to find their rhythm, the Liberty stormed back to secure an 83-75 victory. Their defense played a huge role in the turnaround, holding Indiana scoreless over the final 3:27 of the third quarter and limiting the Fever to just 18 points in the fourth. The Liberty, meanwhile, scored 41 points during that stretch, according to The Athletic.
In the process, New York completed its largest comeback of the season, while Indiana suffered its second-biggest collapse of the year. And at the heart of that comeback was Stewart.
The Liberty star finished with a game-high 30 points, eight rebounds, two assists, and four steals, while also becoming just the seventh player in WNBA history to attempt at least 20 free throws in a single game. As Stewart said, the ability to win ugly is what ultimately separates contenders from pretenders. And that’s exactly what the Liberty did against Indiana, finding a way to get the job done despite being without Sabrina Ionescu.
But even with the victory secured, Stewart was clear that satisfaction has its limits. “We’re happy we got the win, but like growing pains going forward, it needs to be like that all the time,” she said. The comeback was encouraging. The resilience was real. The next step, however, is ensuring that the same fight, focus, and urgency that carried them in the second half are present from the opening tip, so that the Liberty never again need a halftime wake-up call to find the team they are capable of being.
With the win, the New York Liberty improved to 7-4 on the season and extended their winning streak to four games. They’ll look to keep that momentum going when they face the Connecticut Sun in their next outing.
But while the result was another positive one for New York, the reaction to Stewart’s sideline frustration sparked an entirely different conversation.
Breanna Stewart Incident Sparks Fresh Debate Over Caitlin Clark’s Treatment
We all know what happened when Caitlin Clark was caught having an argument with head coach Stephanie White on the sidelines during the game against the Portland Fire. All hell practically broke loose.
We saw the WNBA community offer plenty of opinions of its own. Skip Bayless and Mychal Thompson were among those suggesting that Caitlin Clark could eventually leave Indiana after her apparent fallout with the Fever coaching staff. Others went even further, labeling Clark a diva and questioning whether she was coachable at all.
But that isn’t the kind of treatment Breanna Stewart is getting right now. Instead, she’s being praised for her basketball IQ and for trying to do what’s best for the team. It’s exactly that difference in reaction that WNBA content creator Venom didn’t like, and he made sure to point out what he viewed as a double standard in a video he posted on X.
“Caitlin Clark had a sideline spat with Stephanie White, and they weaponized the entire WNBA media against her. Y’all remember that, right? Clark was called the diva, uncoachable…,” he said in the video. “So, is this going to be blown out of proportion? Is Breanna Stewart going to be called a diva? Is Breanna Stewart going to be called uncoachable? … Keep the same energy!”
Both Clark and White eventually had to address the incident publicly and put the speculation to rest after days of debate. That kind of noise can become a distraction for any team. The Liberty, at least in this instance, haven’t had to deal with nearly the same level of outside attention.
While having a player like Caitlin Clark brings countless benefits, it also comes with a level of attention few athletes in the league experience. Every gesture, comment, and interaction is dissected. It’s the price that comes with having the league’s biggest star, and right now, it’s a reality the Fever simply can’t escape.
