Excitement filled the air as the six-foot-one Notre Dame rookie made her way to the draft stage earlier this season. The crowd’s reaction was understandable: this #22 guard bears a striking resemblance to Caitlin Clark, both in looks and composure. Fans wondered if they were witnessing Clark’s draft all over again. Like Clark, Sonia Citron also shines on the court. Inspired by the Indiana Fever guard, Citron stood confidently beside the reigning rookie after leading her team to victory over the Dallas Wings and notching multiple 20-point double-doubles in her first professional season. And this is just the beginning.

As the Washington Mystics’ rookie, Sonia Citron has impressed fans with averages of 15.1 points, 4 rebounds, and 2.4 assists so far. She even became the only rookie to participate in the 3-point contest during the 2025 All-Star weekend, as a testament to her talent and determination. Citron and Clark share a lot in common, both on and off the court. Besides, Clark revealed why she is a huge fan of Citron’s game, saying, “I’m gonna take Citron. Big fan of her game. Been a big fan of hers since she’s been in college. And I’ve been telling everybody I thought she would be a tremendous player when she got into the league, and she hasn’t let me down, so.” And she couldn’t be more right!

A rising star for the Mystics, Citron achieved another milestone this season. Social media buzzed as I Talk Hoops’ official account announced on X (formerly Twitter), “MILESTONE: Sonia Citron has SURPASSED Caitlin Clark for the most double-digit scoring games by a rookie in WNBA history.” This achievement is also linked to Caitlin Clark.

surpassing Caitlin Clark for the most double-digit scoring games in a rookie season. While she is a standout player on the hardwood, the recent milestone comes as an incredible accomplishment for the Washington Mystics’ rising star. With both Citron and Clark showcasing incredible talent, it’s easy to see why fans sometimes mix up these competitive guards. Citron’s latest achievement sparked a wave of excitement across social media, where fans celebrated her record while also weighing in on the ongoing comparisons between the two.

WNBA Fans Erupt on Social Media

Disagreeing with Sonia Citron’s current record, several fans came in support of Caitlin Clark and highlighted the league’s disparity. A user took to X and answered, “Not really. Had more games to get it done. 41st game. The WNBA only had 40 last season. Given the number of games, she had an extra game advantage.

Talking about Citron’s latest milestone, the fan disagreed with the statement that the rookie surpassed Clark. But they were not the only ones to feel so. Most believed that it was the league that added extra games and dismissed the rookie’s efforts. “Last year it was 40 games, this year it’s 44 games a Sonia did it in 41 games, so CC record still stands,” another user added.

On the other hand, a user commented, “This is what people don’t understand. Caitlin Clark is the baseline of the good crop of talent in the league, not the gold standard. It’s just going to get better every year now.” They clarified that while Clark had an exceptional rookie season, she was just one of the many talented players that the league is expected to watch unfold in the future.

While most held Caitlin Clark in high regard, certain users came to Sonia Citron’s defense. “She should be the ROTY. Though I wonder how many she would have if she had been guarded like Caitlin was. Double/triple-teamed, blitzed, flagrant fouled, full-court pressed, complaints about fans, constant criticism for anything she does, etc.

Comparing Citron’s attitude and dominance with that of Clark, the user was certain that the rookie deserved a freshman title this season. And more users chimed in. “It’s funny how the national media isn’t talking about this… Anything they can do to hold CC to a high standard. Sonia Citron has been breaking records all year. Rookie All-Star, Rookie 3pt Competition, Broke Washington Mystics Rookie Points in a season, which stood since 1996, etc… But no one is talking about her in the National Spotlight! Wonder why that is?”

This fan pointed out that despite being remarkable all season, Citron has not been given her due credit by the media.  As the regular season continues, Citron’s consistency and positive spirit are winning over more fans each game, adding to the excitement of an unforgettable rookie year for both her and Clark.
