Turbulent. That’s one word to describe what the Indiana Fever has been through this season, although we’re sure you’ve heard it all before. Caitlin Clark’s injury, the demolition of Stephanie White’s carefully constructed backcourt, and the DeWanna Bonner episode are all that people are talking about right now, and it seems like nothing’s going Indiana’s way. That is, however, until we look at all the talent the team has unearthed. Case in point? Odyssey Sims.

Every injury substitute has been a godsend for the Fever. That’s a fact. Kelly Krauskopf and Amber Cox have been working hard to make sure the team is still able to compete, and they’ve succeeded! Indiana is clinging to the sixth seed, and a second-straight playoff appearance has almost been guaranteed with just a handful of games left in the season. And recently, Sims had a huge role to play in the team’s success.

But it’s not easy playing for Indiana. Even Odyssey, an eleven-year vet in the league, struggled with the bright lights and the expectations, dropping zero in her Fever debut. Don’t get it twisted, she’s come a long way since then! The five-foot-eight guard is averaging about 10 points, 4 assists, and 3 rebounds a game for Indiana in seven games, and recently hit a massive game-winner over her former home in LA.

So, the front office thought it best to acknowledge the star veteran’s efforts and signed her to a rest-of-season contract. However, the WNBA community has raised a few eyebrows at this signing. Obviously, not because of Sims’ performance, but because of what it means for Indiana Fever’s backcourt moving forward. Let’s find out exactly what fans had to say!

Fans question Caitlin Clark’s status after surprise signing by the Indiana Fever front office

“I want to see her in practice.” The thing is, we were told Caitlin Clark would be returning in the middle of August. However, it seems like her bilateral groin strain and a later disclosed bone bruise are impacting her a lot more than we could’ve ever imagined. Stephanie White is taking no risks regarding the Indiana Fever superstar and wants to see her in at least 5 practice sessions before letting her back on the hardwood floor.

So, now that Odyssey Sims has been signed to a rest-of-season contract, fans are worried that it means that the odds of Clark returning are pretty slim. A ‘shoot-first’ guard rather than a pure facilitator, fans are worried that CC might end up clashing with Sims. “The concept of seeing an odyssey sims and caitlin clark backcourt,” A fan tweeted alongside a video of Shaq laughing. Both players occupy the same position on the court, this rest-of-season contract could spell trouble for CC’s potential return, or how smooth it ends up being.

Another fan agreed. “I like her but if and when CC returns, I hope she is not a ball hog.” Now, it isn’t like Sims doesn’t pass the ball. The five-foot-eight guard is averaging about 4 assists a night while having to take up a large part of the offensive burden as well. However, Caitlin Clark is the same archetype of player with the added benefit of being automatic from three.

Still, Odyssey Sims has shown that she works well with her teammates, too! After hitting the game-winner against the LA Sparks, the WNBA vet gave credit to her fellow players and coaches. “I think my teammates did a great job with the coaches just constantly talking to me. They weren’t worried about my missed shots… It was one of those do or dies, it went in, and I’m excited about that.” She’s a clutch player, and has been insanely productive for the Fever. Which is also why fans are speculating that she might serve as a backup for CC when the star returns.

“The concept of odyssey sims being the backup pg coming off the bench when Caitlin needs rest,” One user justified.  Their tweet pointed out that Sims’ offensive expertise would be a valuable addition for Indiana’s depth. And honestly? Most fans were overjoyed that the vet got signed for the season. “Odyssey Sims deserves this full-season contract. She’s been an amazing asset for the Fever.” Another fan posted, and it was a very common sentiment as a lot of fans agreed! “Woohooo! So grateful for the contribution Sims has already made, and so, so glad she’s sticking around!”

Odyssey Sims has cemented herself as a fan favorite for the Indiana Fever this season. Her explosive offense and undeniable effort are why Indiana is still in the playoff contention due to a couple of late-season wins. However, it will be interesting to see where she fits into the equation if Caitlin Clark comes back this year. Stay tuned for more updates!
