The Indiana Fever finally got their revenge on the Dallas Wings on August 14, handing them a 98-87 loss after Dallas had given Indiana its first defeat of the 2026 season. Behind Caitlin Clark’s 29 points, the Fever extended their winning streak to three games with the playoffs now right around the corner. But while the game itself gave fans plenty to talk about, Sophie Cunningham managed to steal some of the attention with her postgame celebration.

The 29-year-old was seen celebrating the win at Clayton’s Country Bar, where she was caught jamming out to Toby Keith’s Courtesy of the Red, White & Blue alongside fans. And as a clip of the Fever guard went viral, fans had plenty to say about Cunningham simply enjoying herself away from the court.

“More pro athletes need to do this! Have fun, be authentic, and be approachable. Would help their personal brand tremendously,” one fan wrote under an X post shared by OutKick. “What I like about her she’s not pretentious, she’s just having fun, she’s enjoying herself this time in her life,” another added.

Sophie Cunningham has been under plenty of fire over the past few weeks. Ever since her July 21 interview with ESPN, where she opened up about protecting “young girls in sport,” Cunningham has become one of the most controversial figures in the WNBA.

For what it’s worth, Cunningham had made it clear that she simply wants “to get back to basketball” as the discourse around her continued to spiral. But before things could even calm down, the situation caught fire again on August 8 after Chicago Sky guard DiJonai Carrington committed a hard foul against Cunningham and later made a controversial social media post.

So when fans saw Cunningham simply enjoying herself after weeks of scrutiny, many were happy to see her letting loose. But even a moment that appeared to be purely about celebrating a win quickly pulled the conversation back toward the very discourse Cunningham has been trying to move past.

“Sophie is awesome in an activist league that hates 50% of America period. And hates America in general,” one fan added. “Nice to see someone Patriotic in that Anti-America League!” another wrote.

That said, the song Sophie Cunningham was singing raised plenty of eyebrows.

The track was released in 2002 as the lead single from Toby Keith’s album Unleashed. According to the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum, Keith wrote the song “In the wake of the September 11 terrorist attacks” and the death of his father, an army veteran.

Over the past two decades, its fierce messaging has made it both a lightning rod for cultural debates surrounding American nationalism and a beloved barroom singalong celebrating heartland pride. And that made her choice of song another talking point on social media.

Still, amid all the debate, one fan kept it simple.

“I love her,” they wrote.
