Three-level scoring is a very common occurrence in basketball, but the same feat in just a fraction over 1 minute immediately raises the ceiling of performance. That’s exactly what Veronica Burton did against Courtney Williams in the Unrivaled 1v1 basketball tournament. Williams entered the court with experience, but when Burton started the show, the tables turned, and the performance even singled out the NBA for bringing such an entertainment quotient.

A X handle with the username @Shabazz shared a glimpse of Burton’s 1v1 matchup with Williams in Miami on Wednesday, with a perfect reaction to the impressive performance. “Veronica Burton 11-0 😭😭🔥🔥,” the caption of the post read.

Veronica Burton doubled down on Williams immediately after tip-off in her 1v1 matchup. She didn’t just beat Williams 12–0; she never even allowed her a possession. The 75-second matchup began with Burton hitting three consecutive layups with superb dribbling and faint touches, forcing Williams to commit a foul near the rim in her fourth stride towards the basket.

The Vakyries point guard converted two points of the foul, as the foul was conceded within the 3-point line of the court. And then, in her next move, she stepped back, creating space and hitting a precise three-pointer to reach 11 points and win the contest, seemingly without breaking a sweat.

WNBA’s Most Improved Player used her physicality and speed to make the most of her game, limiting Williams’ chances to block her or inflict a steal. The immaculate precision that Burton showcased in the matchup impressed the fans immensely; they didn’t hesitate to pinpoint it to the NBA Front Office.

Fans Ask NBA for 1-on-1 Tournament After Veronica Burton Show at Unrivaled

“Unrivaled is elite bump. NBA players scared to get in the field like this,” a fan wrote. “This unrivaled 1 on 1 tournament shit is fire. NBA all star should take notes,” claimed another.

Reports had surfaced last year that the NBA is looking to include a 1v1 tournament in its All-Star weekend for the 2026 season, with a $1 million prize money and a 16-player bracket. Several notable players, including Kyrie Irving, James Harden, and Giannis Antetokounmpo, signalled positive signs for the event.

However, since then, there have been no developments in the report. For now, NBA fans will have to settle for the entertainment of the three-point contest and wait to see their favorite stars dominate a true 1-on-1 stage like Veronica Burton did.

“Unrivaled players playing for their yearly salary. NBA is not offering a 20 million dollar 1 on 1 prize,” a fan wrote.

The comment underscores the pay disparity between the NBA and the WNBA. For instance, the appeal of the Unrivaled 1v1 basketball is largely driven by its prize pool. $200,000 is the winning sum of the Unrivaled 1v1 tournament, which is slightly less than the 2025 WNBA season supermax of $249,244. A number that’s likely to rise once the new CBA takes effect.

On the contrary, if the same paradigm is to be repeated in a 1v1 tournament with NBA players, the winning prize has to be around $11 million, which is the average salary of NBA players in the 2025-26 season. It’s worth noting that this figure still falls well short of a supermax contract, which is roughly $54 million. Yet despite that, some fans think the NBA needs a 1v1 tournament for more entertainment.

“The NBA needs this badly, this would save All Star weekend,” stated another. “Unrivaled>>>NBA rn,” chimed in another.

To put that into perspective, fans weren’t exactly thrilled with the 2025 All-Star Game. Viewership across TNT, TBS, and TruTV dropped 13% year over year. The NBA even experimented with another new format, but it didn’t seem to move the needle. Now, many fans believe a true 1-on-1 competition might be the spark the event needs.

After all, who wouldn’t want to see their favorite NBA hoops taking the stage in a 1v1 battle?

Imagine Steph Curry going head-to-head against Lebron James on the center court or Kevin Durant going face-to-face with his former teammate Russell Westbrook. It would definitely break the internet if it happened.

In the WNBA, it evokes a similar emotion when a young prodigy like Veronica Burton goes 1v1 against a veteran player like Kelsey Mitchell, made possible by the Unrivaled. However, the 3-on-3 league still has a long way to go. For now, though, the 1v1 tournament is thriving and is the talk of the town. And with her performance on Wednesday night, Burton is at the very core of this spotlight.
