And now, joining that list is SELF magazine, thanks to their latest blunder involving Aliyah Boston.

It was during the All-Star weekend when SELF magazine, known for its focus on women’s health, beauty, and style, asked players to name their dream starting five. It was all fun and games until it wasn’t. Because when they got to Aliyah Boston, the video took off online… for all the wrong reasons.

Boston might not have been on the winning team during the All-Star game as she watched Team Phee break the WNBA scoring record to win 151-131. But it’s her off-court moment that truly won the weekend– her interview with SELF. When asked to name her dream starting five, she smiled and said, “Me… I think Coach Staley would be fire. I’m gonna pick my girl Caitlin. Sylvia Fowles and Maya Moore.” An elite offensive line-up. 3-point shooters, multiple All-Star MVPs, a total of 6 championships, and Hall of Famers? Now that’s a great starting 5.

But it wasn’t that which got fans talking. It was the video SELF magazine posted on their social media that really caught everyone off guard… or you could say, left them completely confused. Thousands of fans jumped in to share their thoughts, and well, some of those reactions were just too good to ignore.

The biggest mistake the magazine made was putting up the picture of Chuck Daly instead of Staley. Obviously, the video editor made a mistake here, but fans were quick to pounce on it! “Dream starting 5… Umm @SELFmagazine I’m pretty sure Aliyah did not say ‘Coach Daly.’ 😂 😭,” one fan said, while another joined in to say, “I was watching this without sound and I was very confused why she put Chuck Daly in her starting five 😭”

It was indeed quite strange to see Chuck Daly getting into the video. The Hall of Fame coach won two NBA championships with the “bad boys” Pistons in 1989 and 1990. But doesn’t exactly make the dream 5 of women’s basketball. So whoever edited the video clearly had a knowledge gap! And one fan rightly pointed out, saying, “😂 like does whoever made this video have any clue??”

One fan even asked, “It’s her college coach Dawn Staley right? 😅.” So, yes, Boston was actually referring to her South Carolina Gamecocks coach Dawn Staley and not Chuck Daly! Staley and Boston together won the 2022 NCAA championship, and it’s fair to say that Staley is one of the best, if not the best, coaches in college basketball right now. With 3 championships to her name as a coach, it’s hard to dispute that fact.

But she was a great player as well, right from her college days with the University of Virginia. While she wasn’t able to win the big dance, she guided the Cavaliers to 4 Final Fours in her time, including a championship game. She was a 2x Naismith Player of the Year and is often regarded as one of the best players to come out of college! Her WNBA career wasn’t too shabby either–Staley was a six-time All-Star. So really, it’s no surprise that Boston picked her.

So yes, SELF magazine made a big mistake with this one, and one fan even said, “Oh my god SELF you can still delete this 😭😭” While it still remains to be seen if they delete the video and release a new one with the correction made, credit to the fans who weren’t hateful and rather just playfully took a dig.
