The Indiana Fever fans were injected with some hope. ESPN listed Caitlin Clark’s return as August 12 and sent the community into a spiral. It turns out CC hasn’t even begun practicing yet. “She’s been able to get a little bit more in her full-court running, with all her body weight,” Coach Stephanie White said. To make matters worse, Fever insider Scott Agness mentioned that Clark will be “At least several more weeks.” Clark has had 3 muscular injuries, and there are speculations on whether Clark should return at all.
Reporter Ros Gold-Onwude referred to the increased physicality of the league as a counterargument for Clark’s impending return. According to Analyst Rachel DeMita, “She needs to be doing everything in practice for at least a week before you throw her back in the mix.”Even DeMita leaned in that she should sit out for this season. It seems the Fever are stuck without a point guard. And their point guard-less system lasted just one game as they lost out to Dallas Wings, with their temporary point guard, Odyssey Sims, going without scoring while playing just 14 minutes off the bench.
With Clark’s return nowhere on the horizon, the Fever need some solutions. They have signed another guard to the roster in Kyra Lambert, on another emergency contract. After injuries to Aari McDonald and Sydney Colson, they had extra space on the roster, and they desperately need ball handlers on this team. The Fever have been clever with their temporary signings as McDonald turned up from nowhere to become the heart of their show. The Fever went on a five-game winning run with her, and it seemed they would be good with Clark out. However, the fans are pretty divided on whether this is one of those situations.

WNBA Community Not Convinced With Indiana Fever’s Kyra Lambert Signing
Like most of the teams, the Indiana Fever have been hamstrung with injuries throughout this season. Coach Stephanie White couldn’t believe their luck when both of their point guards suffered season-ending injuries. “Obviously the two (injuries) at once, and knowing that your second and third point guard in that situation that are out, it was more of a ‘you got to be kidding me’ kind of thing,” White said before their game against the Dallas Wings. The replacement was supposed to be on par with what they had in the past, but the fans are still on edge when it comes to this decision.

The first question in the Indiana Fever fan’s mind,“who?” asked one. Like the Indiana Fever introduced Lambert, she logged 124 games across three years at Duke and a senior season at Texas, showcasing consistency and versatility. Over her college career, she posted averages of 6.8 points, 3.2 rebounds, 2.7 assists, and 1.3 steals per game, shooting an efficient 39.3% from the floor and a sharp 35.1% from deep. Lambert proved herself as a reliable two-way guard with a knack for making plays on both ends and has played internationally since leaving college.

So she has been off the radar for a few years, because of which people have forgotten her exploits, and another person asked the same questions while offering better options. “Who is Kyra Lambert? The Fever should just have open tryouts at this point. We literally could have drafted Lucy Olsen, the perfect backup Point Guard, but chose Bree Hall to cut her instead.” Another fan wrote. Bree Hall was picked by the Fever at No.20 in the 2025 draft, aiming for “defensive versatility.”

However, they waived Hall after the training camp, which hampered their guard depth. In hindsight, that looks like the wrong decision, as Lucy Olsen has been instrumental for the Washington Mystics after being picked at No. 23. Such a precarious situation, with their new signing being a relatively unknown player, means rival fans are also coming after the franchise.
What’s your perspective on:
Is Caitlin Clark's return worth the risk, or should the Fever focus on long-term health?

A seemingly rival fan wrote, “Y’all a poverty franchise this desperate just to miss the playoffs.” Currently, the Fever are 18-15 with just a win off No.4 in the points table. They won without a point guard against the Chicago Sky and lost by just one point against Dallas in an extremely physical game. Currently, they appear comfortable making the playoffs, but that can change quickly. And McDonald was once considered a similar signing.

While she was not unknown as Lambert, McDonald was waived by the Sparks and not signed by anyone. Considering Fever’s history, we never know, Lambert could turn up to be a similar story. Lambert might be successful or not, but this signing brought up even more fears regarding Clark’s injury, as another fan wrote the worst fears of every Fever fan: “CC’s not coming back.” Sadly, with every game that goes by without her, this outcome feels more inevitable. While the management and the fans still have hope.
They are betting on Clark at least coming for the playoffs and making an impact. The fans want their best player playing the game she loves as soon as possible, but it might be good for her health to take some time off. With Stephanie White now working with two fresh options at point guard, Odyssey Sims brings veteran experience and could settle into the lineup quickly. Meanwhile, Kyra Lambert, entering her first WNBA season, will be especially driven to make a strong impression, particularly with expansion opportunities on the horizon.
