In July 2024, Chi-town Barbie found herself in an unexpected comparison. “I be thinking I’m really Angel Reese when I be back there,” Megan Thee Stallion admitted while describing her hoops mindset. Reese, never one to miss a moment, fired back with a signature reply: “My stallion sister said what she saidddd”. Fast forward a few months, and Reese is back in the middle of another surprising comparison.

This time, the Chicago Sky star is being linked to Buffalo Bills quarterback and reigning NFL MVP Josh Allen. At first glance, the connection sounds strange. How could a WNBA forward and an NFL quarterback share anything in common? But according to Andrew Haubner, who spent two years covering Allen in Wyoming, the parallels run deeper than position or sport. On his No Cap Space Instagram handle, he explained that both athletes have a similar trajectory about their potential, their mentality, and just how high their ceilings can reach.

Haubner prefaced his hot take with a striking coincidence. “So get beyond the fact that they were both picked seventh overall in the first round of their respective drafts. It’s a weird coincidence, but it is still there,” he said. Reese went seventh in the 2024 WNBA Draft to the Chicago Sky. Meanwhile, the Buffalo Bills selected Allen with the seventh pick in the 2018 NFL Draft. But the overlap doesn’t stop at draft position.

Scouts viewed both players through the same lens. “The scout for both of them out of college was that they were both really toolsy, high upside, people who didn’t have a ton of great fundamental basis. And so the potential for them was MVP level if you can get them to that ceiling. But getting them to that ceiling was potentially a challenge,” Haubner revealed.

It feels like ancient history now, since Allen is the reigning NFL MVP. Yet in his first and even second season, doubts swirled about whether he would ever meet that ceiling. In the end, though, his steady rise silenced the questions. Haubner believes Angel Reese is walking a similar path. “Angel, I think we’re seeing the same thing. We’re seeing the improvement this year of her as a passer, or her as a facilitator, her as a point forward, and the people that were off the train with her last year [are] maybe starting to get back on the train,” he said.

Her numbers back it up. In her sophomore season, Reese is averaging 14.4 PPG on offense and pulling down 12.6 rebounds, better than last year. Still, Haubner saved the boldest comparison for last, as it is a double-edged sword for the two players. “The thing that two of them have in common is that I think people want to follow them,” said Haubner.

“Like they have a lot of energy on the floor, they’re passionate, they’re intense. And sometimes it leads them to try and make the hero play at the expense of others, but it is coming from a place of wanting to win. Because of that, if Angel stays on the same trajectory, I feel like we are going to talk about Angel Reese in 3-4 years in the way we talk about Josh Allen now. A player that we discounted the elite mental makeup as a means to match the fundamentals with the physical gifts. Once those two things get together, you end up with an MVP-level candidate,” he added.

The LSU graduate is already surpassing last year’s MVP, A’ja Wilson, in rebounds. Her offense has also improved since last year, with a jump from 39.1 percent to 45.8 percent. But unlike Josh Allen, Reese does not have a strong team around her.

Angel Reese is frustrated with the Chicago Sky’s performance

For her 2025 season, Reese and her team are out of playoff contention. But the team’s condition is going from bad to worse. How can Reese make her case for future MVP when Chicago has not managed to win even ten games this season? Revealing her frustrations in the latest 83-79 Phoenix loss, she said, “I think sometimes we get a little comfortable… we can’t lay down, we can’t get comfortable no matter what.”

The Sky finished their game with 21 turnovers as compared to the Mercury’s 9. Furthermore, Phoenix had 17 steals, led by DeWanna Bonner’s five, and 11 blocks. Yet amidst this disastrous gameplay, Reese continued to shine. She scored another double-double this game with 15 points and 20 rebounds.

She now has 46 career double-doubles, surpassing the record set by Tina Charles of the Connecticut Sun in 2010-2011. As for this season, Angel Reese sits on top of the list of double-doubles, surpassing reigning MVP A’ja Wilson and Alyssa Thomas.
