Back in January, when Paige Bueckers became $50,000 richer after she won the Unrivaled League’s Free-Throw challenge, she was asked what she would do with the funds. Her response: “I’ve got some good plans, but no pocket watching over here, I’m gonna take care of it.” And she followed through. Now, extending that same promise is WNBA veteran Marina Mabrey.

The WNBA star joined the Aari & Rachel Unfiltered Podcast to talk about how the players are planning to contribute to the Minnesota Charity Effort. Mabrey also highlighted how they plan to involve the fans after seeing their response at the Philadelphia Tour Stop for Unrivaled Basketball.
“We have something coming actually for the crash jar we can’t say completely, but it’s going to be something where the fans can also get involved. And so, when they go to work and crash out because we know you do it. So don’t even sit here and act like you don’t. They can add to it, and it’s going to go to ICE in Minnesota with all those issues. And hopefully because, at the game in Philly, people were literally holding up money like 50 bills like real money bills, saying, ‘We want to put it in the crash jar.’
“And it’s like they want to donate. They want to be a part of it. And I’m cool with them being a part of it, since you know you guys already put your opinion in any way. Unwanted. So, I might as well let it go to a good place. Yes. That way, the digital part will make it easier for people to get involved, and then it’s going to go to a good place. Paige already donated, so we might as well stick with what all the players want to get involved in.”

Marina Mabrey has a notorious reputation for her overly competitive spirit during games. She has carried over her personality from the WNBA to Unrivaled as well, with her crash-outs having a highlight reel of their own now.
She even created a crash-out jar to channel her emotional side and gain more control over it. She devised a system wherein different events, like curse words, insulting others, or even getting into a fight, would cost her different amounts of money. The money will go into the jar, and she has finally found a good motive to contribute to.
Paige Bueckers already donated the $50,000 she received by winning the Unrivaled Free Throw Challenge to the Hopkins Strong Relief Fund in Minnesota. The Hopkins Strong Relief Fund helps children and Hopkins public school families with food, housing, and utilities.
Minnesota witnessed horror recently as a civilian lost his life in an incident involving the ICE, which deals with the illegal immigration issue in the United States. Even the NBA game between the Minnesota Timberwolves and the Golden State Warriors was postponed in the wake of the public shooting.
While fans would be excited to see how the donation pans out, they recently had to sit through a rather disappointing display from the 29-year-old.
Marina Mabrey becomes an early casualty in the Unrivaled 1-on-1 Tournament
The Unrivaled regular season is on a short break as the street basketball-inspired 1-on-1 tournament takes shape. The 1-on-1 Tournament is an Unrivaled initiative from its inaugural season that pits players against each other, with the winner required to score 11 or more to win the matchup.

The brackets threw up intriguing matchups, with one of them being the rookie Sonia Citron going up against Marina Mabrey. Mabrey was assigned the number 3 seed in Pod C because of fan voting, whereas Sonia Citron had to settle for the 6th seed.
The matchup, though, produced the first upset of the 1-on-1 tournament. Sonia Citron raced to a 5-0 lead early on. But Mabrey responded with fire from beyond the arc and looked close to ending the game at one point, with the scoreline reading 10-5 in her favor. However, Sonia pushed back and evened the scoreline before taking the game with her fadeaway jumper.
The defeat means Mabrey bows out of contention for the 1-on-1 Tournament, and the 22-year-old moves on to face Rae Burrell.
Even though Mabrey could not win the lion’s share of the tournament prize pool, she can still pocket some prize purse if one of her Lunar Owls teammates manages to win the event. Do you think she can do it?
