The Connecticut Sun has not been celebrating too much lately. The soon-to-be Houston Comets have been struggling in the bottom of the league with just 2 wins the entire season. But then, the Chicago Sky arrived. Brittney Griner was the first to celebrate as the WNBA legend and future Hall Of Famer added her name to the record books.

Griner has seen her career taper off in the last few years. Once upon a time, she was the best center in the WNBA bar none. But the two-time Defensive Player Of The Year has averaged only 12.1 points and 4.9 rebounds per game this season. Yet, Griner further exemplified her greatness against the Chicago Sky, becoming the undisputed block leader of the league.
The next generation of paint protectors went up against the last. Kamilla Cardoso tried to score on Brittney Griner in the third quarter with the old turnaround but the veteran was one step ahead of the youngster. Even at 35, she rejected Cardoso for the 4th block of the game and the 878th of her career.
The Connecticut Sun center passed the late Margo Dydek on the league’s all-time blocks list. She had 877 blocks in 323 games and has held the record since 2008. Griner reached it in 364 games and it meant a lot to the Sun star. To applaud her record, Mohegan Sun Arena and the Sunside took a beat to applaud the record. Griner waived at the crowd as Saniya Rivers made a crown gesture on the center’s head.
“Congratulations to Brittney Griner on becoming the WNBA’s all-time leader in blocks, 🎉” the WNBA wrote.

She holds the single-game block record for the league as well, with 11 blocks during a Phoenix Mercury and Tulsa Shock matchup in June 2014. During her 13-season career, she’s also led the league in blocks five different times. With her 4 blocks in this game, Griner is now second all time in 3-block games. This season, Griner also became the 18th player in WNBA history to surpass 6000 points. But all this while, this block’s record was the one in her heart.

Brittney Griner Reflects on Career Legacy After Milestone Night
Brittney Griner is cashing in this season. Griner joined the Sun on a one-year, $1.19 million contract this year, an amount Griner would not have probably received at her age. But she wholeheartedly deserves it. The veteran has been a pillar of the league when it was struggling in the 2010s with multiple all-star call-ups and WNBA first teams. But over her long career, Griner was really looking at this record.
“It’s the one record I literally have been thinking about chasing my whole career,” Griner said in her post game sideline interview. “To get that tonight, I was very happy. Very happy.”
Griner has already solidified herself as one of the greatest players to grace the game. She has a WNBA Championship from 2014 and an NCAA championship from 2012 while winning internationally multiple times. However, even with all that silverware, this blocks record stands equally among the rest.
“Basketball-wise, winning gold, championships, and winning a championship in Phoenix — that’s up there,” Griner further said. “But getting this block shot, the all-time block shot record, now I get to try to put it up so high where hopefully it takes somebody a little minute to get to it so I can have it for a little bit. They all run into each other.”
Hopefully, Griner can garner one last push to ensure this Sun side has something to take away from this season. This 92-63 win has given them some optimism to build on and improve. Only time will tell if Griner can garner one last hurrah.
