Megan Rapinoe and Sue Bird have been the cornerstone of a power couple, but that shelf life was cut short by their recent decision. As the hoops community was preparing for their weekend on Friday, and looking for updates on the much-trending WNBA free agency window, they were struck by the news that Bird and her partner Rapinoe had separated after 10 years of redefining what it means to be a women’s sports couple, leaving the WNBA world in shock.

No fancy announcements. No fancy clips. Just a joint post on their social media handles was all it took to conclude a relationship that possibly redefined the term “power couple” in sports. The couple expressed their heartfelt thoughts in their post, summarizing their decade-long journey together and announcing their decision.

“There really is no smooth or easy way to share this news. After a lot of thought, we’ve made the decision to separate as a couple,” the post read. “This hasn’t been an easy decision, but it’s one we’ve made together, with so much love, care, respect for each other. We’ve shared a whole life over the last decade through big moments and in quite ones, and that is something we’ll always carry with us.”

Megan Rapinoe and Sue Bird met in the 2016 Rio Olympics, when they were both competing for the US National team. The couple made their relationship official just a year later and have shared the frame together ever since. They later announced their engagement in October 2020, before transitioning into post-retirement life a few years later through their podcasting journey.

Very quickly, the couple became one of the most sought-after in sports town, with equally substantial fanbases in basketball and soccer, courtesy of their huge professional success. For instance, Bird is a four-time WNBA champion while Rapinoe is a two-time Women’s World Cup winner.

But on Friday, one solitary decision and a single social media post changed the entire equation for the couple, their fanbase, and their social media following. And the hoops community had a lot to share.

Of course, the first sentiment of any hoops fan would be surprise. After all, who would have thought that such a power-packed sports couple would arrive at such a decision after a decade-long relationship? In these years, Sue Bird and Megan Rapinoe have given their fans so many memories. From the Olympic celebrations on the sidelines to hosting the ESPY Awards in 2020, the couple has been part of some iconic moments in recent times.

As a result, the separation news is a difficult one to hold on to, especially for sports fans.

“Just going to reject this. You two need to fix whatever it is,” wrote a fan.

Several fans, including this one, requested the couple to reconsider their decision. Irrespective of that, the couple has chalked out their plans as they move into a different phase of their life after all these years. But amid this crucial decision in their life, the couple didn’t forget to share a brief message for their fans, who have loved them all these years.

“We are so grateful to this incredible community that has held us up, welcomed us in, and supported us exactly as we are,” they wrote in their post. “So many of you have reminded us, again and again, why loving out loud matters.”

“Everyone was overanalyzing Paige and Azzi; they didn’t notice Sue and Megan broke up 😭,” stated another.

The comment fits in quite perfectly. The majority of the hoops community was submerged in the blues of the Azzi Fudd-Paige Bueckers PR controversy a few days ago. The controversy took place during Fudd’s first official media availability session for the Dallas Wings after going as No.1 in the WNBA Draft 2026. The conversation was majorly heartfelt until a reporter asked a personal question about reuniting with her girlfriend, Bueckers, in Dallas.

Subsequently, the Wings PR team stepped in and announced that they would like to keep the line of questioning away from the players’ personal lives. It led to a major stir in the community about why Fudd was not allowed to answer the question. But little did anyone know that another major heartbreak regarding a hoops town couple would transcend beyond this controversy.

“I literally choked on my coffee what do you mean Sue and Megan are breaking up,” summed up another.

It’s important to understand that the separation isn’t just limited to the couple’s personal lives. It affects a lot of their fans as well. For all these years, the “A Touch More” podcast they hosted together, which drew most of its content from, is now at a crossroads. The podcast was a major platform for the couple to connect with fans.

“We aren’t going anywhere. We’re going to be doing a little trade-off, hosting six more special episodes of A Touch More,” Bird had said. According to reports, Rapinoe is curating her own podcast after the couple’s decision. On the other hand, Sue Bird is looking to bring back the “Bird’s Eye View.” These endeavors will still allow them to tap into their audience. But it’s unclear whether they will have the same appeal as the “A Touch More” podcast after the show’s final six episodes.
