From developing the Major League Soccer (MLS) Academy System to sending talent to top European clubs, all the work the United States Men’s National Team (USMNT) put in has paid off. For the first time in 24 years, the USMNT won a knockout game against Bosnia & Herzegovina, and WNBA star Sophie Cunningham couldn’t help but praise the team for their historic run.

On July 2, the Indiana Fever guard reposted a memorable moment from the aftermath of Team USA’s 2-0 Round of 32 win. “Mark McKenzie led the USMNT in prayer after the Americans moved on to the Round of 16,” read SportsCenter’s original caption, and Cunningham was in awe.
“I love this team!!!” the 29-year-old wrote on X. That wasn’t the only social media post she made appreciating the national men’s soccer team. She then took to Instagram to share the USMNT’s official post.

“FOUND A WAY THROUGH! 🇺🇸,” the team posted on Instagram, and this time Sophie Cunningham simply posted two applauding emoticons in the closed captions.
And it’s easy to see why the women’s basketball icon is so excited. USA has never won a FIFA World Cup since its inception in 1930. The last time Team USA won a knockout stage match was on June 17, 2002, against Mexico. Interestingly, they had won that match 2-0 as well.
However, this time they’ve already outperformed the 2002 squad. The USMNT topped their group, winning two matches, and even the one they lost against Turkey was a competitive 3-2 loss where Christian Pulisic sat out the first half and key players like Folarin Balogun, Tyler Adams, and Antonee Robinson didn’t play.
In fact, Team USA’s success has drawn support from other WNBA stars. Cunningham’s Fever teammate Caitlin Clark wrote a Team USA jersey-themed crop top ahead of their June 24 clash with the Phoenix Mercury.
Meanwhile, Sophie Cunningham is enjoying the World Cup so much she said USA should become the permanent home of the tournament going forward.
Sophie Cunningham wants USA to become the perpetual host
Cunningham discussed Team USA’s success and the whole vibe around the FIFA World Cup in the United States on the most recent episode of her podcast Show Me Something.
The WNBA star discussed the viral videos from the World Cup taking over social media and, more importantly, how good she felt watching fans from across the world coming to the United States and enjoying their time.
“I feel like we should host the World Cup every four years. I have seen so much on my social media of everyone around the world actually celebrating,” Cunningham said.
“I know that America is not perfect, but I have absolutely loved people from foreign countries coming here and saying how great our country is,” added Cunningham.
That being said, the USMNT’s next match will be against a familiar opponent in Belgium. The European team is coming off a massive 3-2 comeback win against Senegal, and it was they who ended Team USA’s World Cup bid in 2014.
However, one thing’s for sure, and it’s that Sophie Cunningham and millions of American football fans will cheer for the USMNT no matter the result.
