Indiana Fever’s Sophie Cunningham is known for her skills on the court, but her latest offseason ambition has nothing to do with basketball and everything to do with state politics.

Cunningham has been spending her time back home in Missouri while nursing her injury. Meanwhile, she has also organized the Sophie Cunningham Classic to provide a platform for the top high-school players from the local region to showcase their skills. The event allows an exchange of knowledge between WNBA stars and the young hopefuls and has been welcomed by the locals in Missouri.

Sophie has been representing Missouri at the highest levels and was recently invited as a special guest to the Senate of Missouri. As the Missouri Senator Jamie Burger welcomed the Indiana Fever star, an image on her official X handle has gone viral.

The 29-year-old guard playfully tweeted that while some fans know her as the Mayor of Columbia, she has her eyes set on a bigger role in the Government.

Sophie tagged Missouri Governor Mike Kehoe, asking him to ‘scoot over’ as she eyes the Governor role.

The ‘Mayor of Columbia’ phrase is a reference to her days before the WNBA.

She earned the nickname, thanks to her dominance on the courts and her popularity while playing for Rock Bridge High School and subsequently, the Missouri Tigers, before being drafted by the Phoenix Mercury. Sophie ended her college basketball days as the all-time leading scorer for the Missouri Tigers and has now been inducted into the Hall of Fame at the University of Missouri.

Right now, though, it looks like Sophie Cunningham is enjoying the offseason to the fullest.

Soon, once the CBA is finalized, the offseason proceedings will get going. One of the first items on the agenda is whether the Indiana Fever will protect Sophie from the Expansion Draft.

The 29-year-old guard has already hinted at her desire to team up with Caitlin Clark and Lexie Hull again in Indiana and push for the WNBA Championship in 2026. Even though Sophie is an unrestricted free agent, she can still be one of the protected players for the Indiana Fever.

However, now, all fans can talk about is Sophie’s recent choices!

Sophie Cunningham is quite a popular figure across the country. While Caitlin Clark is the outright star at the Indiana Fever, Sophie actually eclipsed her teammate as she was the only woman to be named in the top 10 of the most searched athletes in the United States, according to Google’s 2025 ‘Year in Search.’

Sophie has been signing a lot of jerseys, especially at the Sophie Cunningham Classic, attracting several sponsors, participants, and attendees.

Another exclaimed, “Someone needs to get you a Gray Checkmark ASAP!” Of course, if Sophie gets into the US administration, X will grant her a gray badge to separate her profile from others.

But while popularity plays a role in political rise, the field is also seen as one filled with vices, and one fan warned her of the same: “Get away while you still have a soul.”

However, Sophie did not stop there as she ended the tweet with a question.

“Is it allowed to joke with important ppl?… guess I’ll find out,” she wondered.

Fans were quick to answer the question in the comments. While some said she has ‘diplomatic immunity in Missouri,’ others joked that the question will be answered soon, depending on whether she disappears or not.
