Serbia’s flag bearer Novak Djokovic has been the most dominant player over recent years. By the time his career took off, Federer and Nadal had already established themselves. As of today, the race for the record of holding the most number of grand slam titles is heating up.
After the resumption of tennis this year due to the coronavirus outbreak, Novak has had a below par season so far. The Serb was disqualified at the US Open and suffered big time against Nadal at Roland Garros. Around the course of this years US Open, Djokovic along with a few players resigned from the ATP Player Council and formed the PTPA (Professional Tennis Players Association).
Most recently, Djokovic insists on scrapping the current rule of best of 5 sets at the grand slams. Instead, he suggests to opt for the best of 3 sets format. Taking strong objection, Australian legend Todd Woodbridge said, “If you make all the tournaments the same, it loses interest. You’ve got to be careful as a brand, you would be burning a good brand, and what separates a major from a regular week.”

Novak is one of the most well built athletes not just in tennis but across all sports. The physical aspect of the sport has never been executed better by anyone else. To play 3 matches for over 4 hours each, fails to take a toll on him. He is the perfect guy to promote the best of 5 sets format.
Todd went on to add, “I’m a little surprised by Novak’s comments. He is one of those players that utilises the best-of-five format as well as anyone. He has great fitness, he bounces back well from tough matches, and it’s allowed him to win matches he would perhaps not have won if they were shorter.”
