Allyson Felix is taking part in her fifth Olympic Games, hoping to add yet another medal to an already impressive tally. The six-time Olympic gold medallist should be declining in performance with age, but it seems as if she just moves on like fine wine.

In her 400m women’s semifinal heat, Felix managed to place second and qualify for the finals with a timing of 49.89 seconds. Not only was this a season’s best for her, but also her best timing recorded since becoming a mother in 2019.

The American had to think more than twice about continuing her career after her pregnancy due to complications that could have proved to be fatal. However, as a hardened track athlete, Felix soldiered through and is now back to her best.

She placed second in her semi-finals heat, coming short of Jamaica’s Stephenie Ann McPherson, who ran a personal best timing of 49.34. She too is warming up well for the finals that will see the clash of the very best.

Two out of the three Americans competing in the race will see the finals. Quanera Hayes, also a mother like Felix, placed fourth in her race with a timing of 49.81. While it may not have been her best performance, she survived to see the finals on non-automatic qualification.

Felix will be competing in her sixth Olympic finals and is certainly no stranger to the podium. However, unlike her previous campaigns, this one will be a lot harder. At 35 years of age, she is not the same athlete we saw in the previous editions of the Games, but this season’s best performance has given us that bit of hope to see her medal.

Hayes and her, as working mothers, have set a big example and have done their children proud by competing in such conditions. The pandemic gave them time to get back up and train. Felix herself took the opportunity to launch her own lifestyle brand, known as ‘Saysh’, which she debuted at the Track and Field trials in Eugene, Oregon this year.
