Press conferences in the tennis world rarely raise eyebrows. Sure, there’s the odd controversial question and comment here and there. However, more often than not, they involve questions and relatively straightforward and honest answers from players and coaches. Unfortunately for Briton Emma Raducanu, her Madrid Open presser with her country’s press left both the media and fans flabbergasted. It didn’t take long for her critics in the British press to lay into Raducanu’s attitude.

However, there are some figures in tennis who have come out in support of Raducanu. The latest instance saw Danish men’s player and current World No. 7 in the ATP rankings, Holger Rune, take to Twitter and back the Briton.

How did Holger Rune express his support for Emma Raducanu?

Raducanu’s responses at the Madrid Open presser were so short that it almost felt like she was not interested in answering the questions at all. The press asked a total of 16 questions, and quite amazingly, Raducanu managed to answer all of them in only 58 words. Unsurprisingly, there were many in the media and in the wider world of tennis who were upset with the Briton’s behavior.

However, Holger Rune wasn’t one of them. Instead, Rune chose to support Raducanu and tweeted to show his backing of the  2021 US Open women’s singles champion. His tweet was in response to a post by Portuguese journalist Jose Morgado, which featured an image containing the questions and answers from Raducanu’s controversial presser. Morgado captioned it, “Emma Raducanu, troll mode in Madrid.”

As a response to Morgado’s tweet, Rune tweeted, “The only way to be sure not to be misunderstood is to give nothing”.

Who else in the tennis world is on Raducanu’s side?

Raducanu’s brief and to-the-point responses may have drawn the wrath of the British press. However, after she announced her withdrawal from the Madrid Open a few hours later, two well-known names in the tennis world rushed to support the 20-year-old. Eugenie Bouchard, the Canadian tennis player, and Chris Evert, the retired American legend, have both shared their opinions on Raducanu’s answers.

Both of them empathized with Raducanu and felt that the Briton’s answers were understandable. After all, Raducanu has faced persistent problems with her right wrist from 2022.
