The former German professional shared her honest opinion on the difficulty that big players face because of their declining athletic ability. Andrea Petkovic used the reference of Serena Williams, who retired from tennis in 2022 because of her repeated injuries, to make sense of Andy Murray’s recent retirement from tennis. Petkovic referred to their outstanding on-court performance, which eventually deteriorated as they aged because of various physical constraints. “But however, at one point, the biology just catches up with everyone,” she said in a podcast.

However, Andrea Petkovic also made an underlying hint to Novak Djokovic, another tennis legend who is still competing at the top level, about the inevitable nature of biological constraints.

“Andy Murray, Serena Williams, Novak Djokovic, these type of players, they are way ahead of the pain. So when they start aging and start playing worse, they are still a little bit above the beating most of these players. And I just think for them, it’s harder to take because they’re used to being so much better for the longest of times.”, she said.

Petkovic’s viewpoint provides insightful information about the difficulties that athletes have in the later phases of their careers. Petkovic’s unique approach to coming in support of his colleague’s decision to retire from tennis shows her admiration for the British player.

While talking about his excellent abilities on the court, she has previously said in an interview, “If you ever watch Andy Murray running to a drop shot please pay attention to his racquet, because he uses it as support to push himself and propel himself forward. Maybe I should have tried that in my old days.”
