At the 2021 US Open, British tennis star Emma Raducanu won her first Grand Slam title. The 20-year-old tennis player was coached by Andrew Richardson, who helped her win her first Grand Slam championship. But only 10 days after claiming her first championship, Raducanu and her coach called it off. And over two years later, the British tennis coach has finally revealed the reason behind the abrupt breakup.

The 20-year-old and Richardson had longstanding tennis ties. He was the coach of the British tennis player from the age of 11 till she turned 13. After the 2021 Wimbledon Championship, they teamed up once more and won a Grand Slam championship.

Emma Raducanu’s former coach opens up about their surprising split

Richardson has at last disclosed the cause of his split with the British tennis star, which occurred only a few days after the two of them shared a Grand Slam victory. In a recent interview with the Daily Mail, the 49-year-old disclosed that they were on a 9-month trial, which ended immediately after their maiden Grand Slam win. He did, however, added that after winning the US Open, he was quite eager to renegotiate the contract.

He said, “I wanted to carry on, and I had a plan that I wanted to put in place for Emma. This thing about ‘I wanted to go off and coach my son’ is not true, but it seems to come up all the time. After probably ten days to two weeks (following the Open) I didn’t have a contract.”

He also added that he had a strategy for the US Open winner and wanted to continue working with her when he was informed that he would be out of the contract. Like her former coach, the 20-year-old also gave an explanation as to why she had dismissed him shortly after a triumphant run after they had separated.

When Emma Raducanu spoke about the surprising split 

The move completely shocked the tennis community because it was the British tennis coach who helped Raducanu win her first major championship. Following the dissolution in 2021, she defended her position in an interview with ESPN. She indicated that she required a coaching assistant with more WTA tour experience.
