The French Open is becoming a problematic tournament for everyone involved. From the players to the match officials to the organizers, everyone seems to be in the mood for controversy. But now, the audience has also ended up being problematic. While a challenge to a call is a normal occurrence, the audience of the match is quite vociferous about the situation. Patrick Mouratoglou, ex-coach of Serena Williams, recently expressed his surprise at the reaction of the crowd.

Roland Garros has seen controversies ranging from tennis stars talking about political controversies, an unfair elimination due to an accident, and even booing players who defeat French players.

As the problems keep piling up at the 2023 Roland Garros, the crowd has become too involved. As has become tradition, players can challenge a call that they feel is unfair. While a normal thing to do, the crowd has started booing players for doing so. Mouratoglou addressed the issue in a video he shared on his Instagram page.

He said that he noticed the incessant booing from the start of the season. He added that the crowd makes it look quite bad. But the player is completely in their right to do so.

Since the start of the season I noticed that when a player is asking for the chair umpire to check a mark, the crowd is booing him nonstop. It looks like he’s doing something so wrong and so bad. I think it’s not fair for the players because when they ask to check a mark, is because they feel that there was a mistake, so they already feel bad and they ask to check, they just ask to check, which is again, completely in their right.

The French coach further said that the jeers from the crowd will make the player feel worse since they already feel bad for the delay. He was confounded and stated that if the player were to do it excessively it would be understandable. Mouratoglou added that since the officials can make mistakes, the player can challenge a call occasionally.

Unfair call ends Tiafoe’s stint

As fans jeer the players for a challenge, Frances Tiafoe was a victim of why players ask for one. During his match against Alexander Zverev, the umpire made a controversial call. A shot got called in even though the hawk-eye system showed it was out of bounds. Tiafoe lost himself to the moment and the second set. This helped Zverev capitalize on the game, and he ended up being victorious.
