Online betters spat venom at the reigning Wimbledon champion. Just a few days back 16-times ATP winner Stan Wawrinka felt the wrath after his exit from Astana Open, 2023. Now, it’s the turn for Marketa Vondrousova. The 24-year-old Czech tennis player expressed her exasperation for dangerous patterns in tennis through her Instagram stories. Currently number 8, she recently got knocked out of the China Open through her defeat to Anhelina Kalinina in the Round of 64. The Ukrainian defeated Vondrousova (1-6,6-4,6-1), resulting in a major upset at the National Tennis Center, in Beijing.

Ever since writing her name in the pages of history by becoming the first unseeded player to win the women’s Wimbledon title, Maky has failed to put her mark on the WTA Tour.

Winning Wimbledon doesn’t come out of a fluke. Winning and losing are part and parcel of a game, but to hang your money on a thread and cursing the thread after the loss? Does it make sense? Maky, being a top professional, knows how to counter these and she might well have expected as much.

Through her Instagram story, she exposed those comments and wrote Fabrizio Romano’s favorite line, “Here we go again.”

No rain, no flowers

This is what it says on one of Vondrousova’s tattoos. It simply means success doesn’t come easy and you have to endure the hard stuff to get through to the good stuff. Sports run in her blood. Her mother was a prominent volleyball player for Slavia Prague, her father used to play tennis for recreational purposes and her maternal grandfather was an Olympic Silver medalist. That tells you enough about the source of endurance in Maky.

She has struggled with her injuries since her early days and missed the second half of 2019. But to come back, drop shot the criticisms and create history is amazing. On top of that, she is only 24. A lot is yet left to reach her prime.
