When it comes to taking advice in any field of work, one has to approach a veteran. In tennis, Swiss legend Roger Federer is the veteran, people would love to advice from. Teenage tennis sensation Coco Gauff got the opportunity to receive an invaluable piece of advice from Federer but did not internalize the Swiss Maestro’s words until much later.

Gauff remembers that the biggest advice Federer gave to her was about losing. As tennis players play a lot of matches, the pressure one puts on themselves to win is immense. He also told her that winning continuously will be impossible, and one needs to learn how to move on.

While Gauff nodded along to his words, it took her a few years before she actually understood what Federer meant. She lost to Simona Halep in round 3 of the 2022 Madrid Open and then realized what the Swiss Maestro meant.

I said, ‘Of course, yeah, yeah, yeah,’ but, you know, I didn’t really think about that until after I lost in Madrid. And I was like, you know what? He’s right. You’re not going to win all the time. Whatever happens, happens, just enjoy it. Enjoy the point, enjoy the moment.”
