When she talks about India, Chris Evert, widely known as “America’s Sweetheart,” can’t help but break out in a broad smile. She has a pleasant recollection connected to chicken curry and the Amritraj Brothers.

The Amritraj Bothers competed in the World Team Tennis tournament for the Los Angeles Strings. The eldest of the Amritraj Bothers, Vijay, partnered with Ilie Nastase to win the doubles competition in 1978. During the same year, Chris Evert was featured on singles released by LA Strings.

In an interview given for the Times of India in 2013, the former World No. 1 responded to a question about her time spent playing tennis with the legendary doubles team by saying, “Ah! The Amritraj Brothers and “chicken curry”.

“I was really good friends with Vijay and Ashok when we were playing World Team Tennis for the LA Strings, and they used to take me to all the Indian restaurants. That’s when I fell in love with chicken curry. Still having it,” the eighteen-time Grand Slam champion mentioned with delight.

In addition, the 67-year-old acknowledged, in particular, the development of Indian tennis players, despite the fact that India’s system wasn’t optimal for nurturing top talents. Moreover, she had a lot of questions regarding the kind of tennis played in India.

Evert reached an incredible 34 major singles finals and was victorious in 18. Speaking of the semi-finals, the former American tennis great competed in 56 majors and reached the semi-finals in 52 of them. In addition, she is the current holder of the record for winning at least one major title for an incredible 13 consecutive years.
