The former coach of the American tennis legend, Serena Williams, recently made another claim that could raise a lot of eyebrows in the tennis world. In his Instagram reel, Patrick Mouratoglou spoke about the rising star, Carlos Alcaraz. The French coach claimed that Alcaraz, who is an up-and-coming Spanish player when compared to established greats like Rafael Nadal, is a better player on clay than the ‘King of Clay’ himself. This unexpected revelation from the coach has caused quite the stir among fans and analysts alike.
Mouratoglou has coached some of the biggest names in the game, including Serena Williams, Grigor Dimitrov, and Stefanos Tsitsipas. However, his recent comments about Alcaraz have left many scratching their heads.

Serena Williams’ former coach shares his praise for Carlos Alcaraz
On his Instagram reel, the French coach claimed that Alcaraz is an “all-court player.” He claimed that Alcaraz is equally comfortable on both hard and clay courts. However, he added that “King of Clay” has developed his game on other surfaces over time. He went on to explain that Alcaraz has some unique weapons in his arsenal that make him particularly deadly on clay. Mouratoglou also cited Alcaraz’s drop shot, which he called masterful, as well as his kick serve and forehand. The former coach of Serena Williams also praised Alcaraz’s movement on the court. He added that it is a key factor in his success on clay.

Even if we set aside any potential biases on Mouratoglou’s part, his assessment of Alcaraz’s potential is certainly worth considering. The young tennis ace has already shown incredible promise on the court. He has won multiple Masters events while also securing his first Grand Slam title at the US Open 2022.
In the reel, Mouratoglou spoke, “I think Carlos Alcaraz is an all-court player. I don’t think he is a clay court player. Rafa is more of a clay court player. Of course, he is an all-court player but he has learned to play well on other surfaces. But originally he was a clay court player which is not the case for Carlos. I think he is an all-court player from the start. He plays the same on hard as on clay.”

The coach added, ” Maybe I will give a little advantage for him on clay than hard because he has some weapons that are deadly on clay. The drop shot. He is a master in drop shots. His kick serves one of the best if not the best on tour. And his forehand. On clay, you have more time to move from backhand to forehand and dictate your shirts. And of course, he is an incredible mover. When you put all of this together, I think it gives him even an extra edge on clay compared to hard court.”
