Even to this day, discrimination is prevalent in almost all parts of the globe. Prejudice based on caste, color, and religion is among the most common forms of discriminatory behaviour. If we focus on racism in sports, even some of the greatest athletes, like Serena Williams, Venus Williams, and Tiger Woods, have been the victims. Recently, another American teen tennis player, Coco Gauff, shared her experience of the same.
The rising American star and the Citi Open champion, Gauff, weighed in on the sensitive issue. Despite being only 19, the World No.7 has already been on the receiving end of several racist incidents. The sad reality is that a lot of them have come from the fans themselves. Responding to a tweet, Guaff chose an unexpected response to highlight how casual racism has affected her career.

Recently, a Twitter user asked their followers to share their brush with incidents of racism. However, there was one catch: the experience must have a humorous edge to it. Somehow, his tweet went viral as celebrities started retweeting it with their experiences. A few tennis players also shared their stories on the same thread. Soon Gauff joined them as well to expose the fans.
Gauff said, “I sign autographs as myself but occasionally I am somehow also signing as Sloane, Venus, Serena, Taylor, Alycia, and yesterday I got Leylah for the first time lollll.” The 19-year-old exposed the fans who know very little about the players and still make their way to matches. They assume that all people of color are the same and disrespect them by misidentifying them as other players.

However, Gauff was not the only tennis player to share her experiences on the tennis circuit. Another fellow American replied to her and admitted that he too found himself involved in a similar affair recently.

Gauff and Eubanks have one of the strongest bonds in the tennis world. As it turns out, they have also been involved in quite a few similar incidents of facing prejudice. Eubanks replied to Gauff’s tweet, saying, “I got called Monfils twice in DC lol“. In another disappointing yet unsurprising turn of events, fans once again managed to disrespect a person of color.

People in marginalized communities often find themselves subjected to racism. Even in 2023, there haven’t been enough reforms to overcome the casual but heartbreaking discrimination that individuals face on a daily basis. As narratives of such incidents emerge from players on the circuit, it becomes clear how rules and compensations have failed to make a lasting impact on the status quo.
