Coco Gauff’s former coach opens up about his early retirement
The 35-year-old Spanish tennis coach has been in the headlines this year because of his successful Grand Slam attempt with Gauff. But do you know the story behind how he got into coaching even after being such an amazing star on the court? The former ATP player recently appeared on The Functional Tennis Podcast, where he revealed the heartbreaking story that led him to early retirement.
He said, “I retired because there was one situation that I was coming back from long injury. And then I started to play well, again, winning good matches, but then I had a crash accident. And that crash accident was tough for me, because later I tried to come back, but then, you know, was not working.”

In addition, he highlighted how the problems didn’t stop there, one after the other, there were surgeries and issues that created problems for him both on and off the tennis court. Gauff’s ex-coach stated, “I cannot because I don’t have the energy I was 30 years old, to coming back from zero again, maybe a lot of times and, and yet, I felt that was the moment.”
And now, at the age of 35, he has played a huge role in Gauff’s first Grand Slam title that came this year. But now, after going separate ways during the WTA Finals, his new partnership with another tennis player has grabbed a lot of attention.

Coco Gauff’s ex-coach reunions with Zheng Qinwen
The 2022 WTA Newcomer of the Year is currently making a lot of headlines with her recent partnership. The 21-year-old Chinese tennis player recently made a huge announcement on her Instagram account regarding reuniting with the Spanish tennis coach after parting ways this clay season.
While sharing a picture with her long-time coach, she stated how the duo is ready to rule the tennis court. She wrote, “Reunited after some time apart, ready to embark on the journey together and prepare for the upcoming year.” Both of them have previously worked together for almost 2 years, but now they are back on the grid to give the best performance on the court.
