Iga Swiatek, known for her precision and poise on the court, took a bold step by bringing in one of the sport’s sharpest minds—Wim Fissette—as her new coach. It’s a partnership buzzing with potential; with Fissette known for guiding top players like Naomi Osaka and Kim Clijsters. Tennis journalist Chris Oddo can’t hide his excitement about the collaboration.

With Fissette’s track record of guiding elite players to Grand Slam glory, Oddo believes this could be the spark that propels Swiatek to even greater heights. Talking about Swiatek’s decision, tennis journalist Chris Oddo said to sport.pl, “Surely Wim will be able to look at her game with a fresh eye and give Iga a chance to constructively rethink her shortcomings. I’m sure they’ve already developed a plan, a few key things to work through. There is no guarantee of success because sport never gives it, but I think it will be another great adventure for Iga and her team.”

Iga Swiatek’s new coach, Wim Fissette, has wasted no time setting ambitious goals for the Polish star as she faces mounting pressure from Aryna Sabalenka, who is poised to dominate the WTA Tour. He said, “Our goal is for Swiatek to start adding more Grand Slam titles on other surfaces as well. The clay-court season has its own twists. There are a lot of matches and tournaments played in a short period of time. You need to get into a rhythm, gain confidence, and after Paris it’s time to switch to other surfaces.”

Apparently, Sabalenka has had an incredible 2024, winning the season’s first and last Grand Slam titles and solidifying her status as a formidable opponent. Furthermore, Sabalenka advanced to the Beijing Open quarterfinals after winning the US Open, and a week later, she took the victory one step further by winning the Wuhan Open. On the other hand, Iga Swiatek has not been seen as much on the tennis scene since her unfortunate exit in the quarterfinals of the US Open.

At the same time, Fissette has made a bold statement regarding his new mentee.

Iga Swiatek’s new coach drops a bold ‘best tennis’ player update

Renowned Belgian coach Wim Fissette has a stellar record on the WTA Tour. He has coached a number of elite players, including Naomi Osaka, the former world No. 1 and four-time Grand Slam champion, with whom he recently parted ways a few weeks back. Fissette, who is now concentrating on Iga Swiatek, called the chance to coach the rising Polish talent “a great honour.”

Despite Swiatek’s incredible achievements, Fissette praised her as a tennis player. He added, “After the end of my collaboration with Naomi [Osaka], I was hoping to receive a call from another player, and if possible from someone like Iga. It’s obviously a great honour. And very special to be able to coach a world No 1. Iga is probably the best tennis athlete of all time. She’s very fast, defends extremely well, is very solid.”

As the WTA Finals draw closer, Swiatek and Fissette know they’ll need to hit the ground running, sharpening their strategies to make an immediate impact. With the stakes so high, supporters will be keen to see how well the new alliance works, so the pressure is on. Swiatek will immediately be put to the test when she competes in Riyadh against very competitive women like Aryna Sabalenka and Coco Gauff.
