It’s difficult to make a hobby out of one’s profession. However, some, like Leylah Fernandez, manage to enjoy their work in their relaxing time. Many a player say that they don’t prefer watching tennis in their free time, but rather analyze their opponent’s and their own game. Fernandez has a similar line of thought, but interestingly, she doesn’t follow her fellow WTA players.

While the Canadian player does watch tennis, Fernandez only chooses to watch men’s tennis to enjoy it. She revealed her favorite players to watch during the media day at the San Diego Open. While she doesn’t watch women’s tennis for recreation, Fernandez said, “But on the men’s side, that’s a little bit easier because I’m not gonna be playing against them. I’m excited to watch Alcaraz play because of the intensity and the variation he gives to his opponents. Also, Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray.” Carlos Alcaraz, Novak Djokovic, Andy Murray, and Alexander Bublik were the players on her list.

She reasons, “Andy Murray has fought so much for the last few years, and the way he keeps fighting and finding a way, it always entertaining to see what he does next. Of course, there’s Bublik. Does crazy stuff on court and always makes the highlight reel. So watching him is always entertaining; it brings a smile to my face.”

While one would assume Fernandez would prefer her fellow WTA players to watch in her free time and perfect her game, she doesn’t even watch them in her leisurely time!

Leylah Fernandez would not choose to watch the WTA for enjoyment

Although she finds joy in watching men’s tennis, Leylah Fernandez first revealed that she doesn’t watch women’s tennis for the purpose of analysis. “It’s a little hard because I’m watching tennis with a competitor’s eyes and not much as a fan. Sometimes when I watch tennis, I’m watching it to analyze other’s games, my games to see what I could do against them. It’s a little hard right now to say which player gets me excited to keep watching.”

Since it is her profession, watching tennis in her free time is not something Fernandez would opt for. However, she does like to watch those who entertain her the most, which include Alcaraz, Djokovic, Murray and Bublik. She might find more players she wants to watch as more players come up.
