Belinda Bencic has won the women’s singles gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics for Switzerland. It is obviously a magnificent achievement, and her fellow Swiss player, Stan Wawrinka, feels the same way. Appearing on Yonex Tennis’ Instagram live, he spoke to Darren Cahill about Bencic’s medal for the whole of Switzerland.

Belinda was almost on the verge of winning a double gold. However, she could not repeat her performance in the women’s doubles final. Bencic and her partner, Viktorija Golubic, lost to Barbora Krejcikova and Katerina Siniakova of Czech Republic.

Switzerland has some amazing players: Stan Wawrinka on Belinda Bencic winning the gold

Roger Federer and Stan Wawrinka won the men’s doubles gold medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Since then, Switzerland has not experienced any major success at the grand event; Federer’s men’s singles silver medal has been their only medal so far.

However, Bencic has turned the tables with her splendid performance.

Each Olympic, with a lot of athletes, I think tennis is again showing that in Switzerland we have some amazing players. And she did the amazing job to get the gold plus the doubles medal.

“It’s something really special in Switzerland, that’s for sure,” said Wawrinka during the live.

Wawrinka understood the importance of her win and a gold medal for the country. He certainly missed out on the competition this time around and will forever remember his gold in Beijing.

Belinda’s singles match, on the other hand, was a dream run. She played with passion and defeated Marketa Vondrousova 7-5, 2-6, 6-3 in two-and-a-half hours. Coming off of one of the biggest achievements in the sports world, she will now be looking set for a strong finish at the US Open later this month.
