Frances Tiafoe, touted to be the next American Great, has given the country hope. Tiafoe’s backhand tends to cause havoc, generating incredible amounts of torque like a dragon wing. As a result, the tennis player has been appropriately dubbed the BigFoe. But how did the 25-year-old’s nickname, one representative of his on-court persona, make its way to the rising tennis star?
As Tiafoe began to play some incredible tennis, his admirers began referring to him by his nickname, supporting him to the fullest. After facing an early defeat at the Italian Open, the American terrace player appeared in Serena‘s ex-coach Patrick Mouratoglou’s tennis event, the Ultimate Tennis Showdown.

How did Frances Tiafoe come up with his nickname?
In that conversation, Frances Tiafoe revealed how he got the nickname and also the moment when he decided to use the nickname. The Ultimate Tennis Showdown Twitter account shared a video of the 25-year-old describing the exact movement and how he found his nickname.

He shared, “I had two friends growing up, and we talk about what college we’d go to. And they said, “If you play for Georgia Bulldogs, they will call you BigFoe! Wouh Wouh.” That was kind of like a funny thing. And then it kind of just stuck. And I was like, why don’t I get to use it? It’s kind of my alter ego and you know when I’m out there, I’m BigFoe.”
The American tennis star joined hands with the 23-time Grand Slam Champion’s former coach to shake up the tennis world. The UTS is a new tennis League for a different zone that is created to entertain and create off-beat sports moments.

When Novak Djokovic addressed Tiafoe with his nickname
Tennis players typically call out the complete name or call out the last name when referring to other players. In any case, the 36-year-old made a playful remark earlier this year regarding the outfit of a tennis player wearing the No. 12 ranking in the world and compared him to the real BigFoe. When the tennis player was questioned about Tiafoe’s bizarre clothing in a press conference after winning the quarterfinals, he replied that he dressed up like BigFoe.

Djokovic continued by mentioning his peculiar apparel and the fact that tennis is played very differently in North America than it is in Europe and, it seemed, elsewhere in the world.
