After a 2-year gap, Novak Djokovic made a glorious return to the US Open. Returning after the American Slam hiatus, the 36-year-old tennis player left no stone unturned to make his comeback count. He recently defeated Ben Shelton in the semi-final round to edge a little closer to his 24th Grand Slam title. While he is just a step away from this glorious achievement, he recently talked about equaling Margaret Court’s long-standing 24 Grand Slam Singles record.

However, in the grand scheme of things, he is not the only one who came close to breaking Court’s momentous record; Serena Williams was once in the same position. But the two players’ takes on the situation were wildly different. As the Serb stands on the precipice of glory that the 41-year-old American tennis great once occupied, Djokovic’s unambiguous assertion regarding the same is certainly interesting.

Novak Djokovic responds to possibly equaling Marget Court’s record

After winning the semi-finals against the 20-year-old American tennis player, the 36-year-old has once again reached the finals of the tournament to create history and win his 24th Grand Slam title. Recently, after the semi-final victory, during the post-match press conference, he highlighted his take on breaking Court’s 24 major titles.

While Djokovic didn’t talk much about matching the record, the world’s second-ranked tennis player highlighted how he is not thinking about anything else other than displaying his best game on the court. Instead, he mentioned how there was a moment when he almost made it to the 24th Grand Slam earlier this year in Wimbledon. He said, “I am not thinking about Court?s 24 Slam titles. I was close in London but lost to a better player. I know a lot of people wanted our match again here. Every time I?m in a Slam final, it?s a shot at history, but I can?t think too much about it.”

Rather than deliberating about winning the 24 Grand Slam titles, Djokovic is trying to be mindful and thinking about the present. This mindset marks a departure from Serena Williams’ attitude a few years ago, where after clinching her 23rd Grand Slam title, she took a bratty jibe at being just a step away from breaking the record.

Serena Williams’ take on failing to break Court’s record

Till the very end of a two-decade-long tennis career, Williams tried her best to break into the 24 major titles elite group but stopped her tally just short, at 23 major titles. Last year, before playing her last Grand Slam tournament, the American tennis legend appeared on Today’s show, where she talked about how, in her eyes, she had already broken Court’s record.

Further, she also talked about how she had never dreamed of even having 23 Grand Slam titles. Serena discussed how she never thought of achieving the stature of a legend: “I never dreamt of having this many Grand Slams or titles. I just thought I would play tennis and maybe win a Grand Slam or two. For me, it?s all a bonus.”

While Williams could not break the marvelous record set by Court before the Open Era began in 1968, Djokovic has found the opportunity to make history for the second time this year.
