The upcoming tennis film “Challengers” is once again generating buzz everywhere! But this time, it is not because of tennis fans fanning the promotion flames or any controversies around the film. Since the release of the highly-anticipated tennis film starring Zendaya’s teaser, there has been a lot of debate about how to carry the idea of a tennis movie.

However, the film’s announcements and trailer release have drawn a lot of criticism over the past few weeks. Now, the mastermind behind this masterpiece, Luca Guadagnino, has spoken about his R-rated tennis film. In a brief one-liner, the director succinctly summarised the premise of his entire film.

Tennis-centric movie ‘Challengers director finally speaks up on the film

Zendaya’s tennis-centric movie was supposed to have a theatre release this year. However, it was moved because of the SAG-AFTRA strike and also owing to the R-rating certificate it received. The film’s Italian director, after a month of dealing with the postponed release, recently described the movie in his own words. A film update Twitter channel shared the 52-year-old director’s statement on the R-rated movie: “A love triangle where all corners touch,” he said, focusing on the plot’s main angle.

‘Challengers’ is a romantic comedy movie that features a love triangle between the characters played by Zendaya, Josh O’Connor, and Mike Faist. In the movie, the Spider-Man actress plays the role of Tashi Duncan, a former tennis player who finds her way in life by taking on a coaching role. The American actress trained with none other than Andre Agassi’s ex-coach, Brad Gilbert, to brush up on her skills.

The Italian director is not the only one who has spoken about the concept of the movie. In fact, earlier this month, the British actor, who is also a part of the movie, discussed why the movie has been generating such positive buzz. Here’s a hint: it’s not solely because of Zendaya.

When Josh O’Connor revealed the movie’s real challenges

A few days ago, one of the movie’s male leads, Josh O’Connor, revealed why the movie got tongues wagging all over. In an interview with Empire magazine, the 33-year-old British actor explained that besides Zendaya’s incredible screen presence, the director has focused on the sensuous physicality of the sport.

Rather than the game itself, the movie focuses on the interpersonal tensions of the lead characters as they spend their days on the tennis court. O’Connor’s other co-star, Mark Faist, also highlighted how the Italian director had very little knowledge of tennis before the shooting. Instead, he was rather more interested in certain other emotional nuances that would deliver the drama of the story.
