There are some differences when it comes to men’s and women’s divisions. These differences have become a common point of discussion in tennis. However, there is one disparity that many aren’t privy to. Brad Gilbert, the former coach of Andre Agassi and the current coach of Coco Gauff, mentioned the disparity in ranking points received between men and women as an often overlooked problem in the sport.

Along with the issues pointed out by Gilbert, an old problem still plagues one tournament of the sport. Coco Gauff, winner of the Washington Open, earned solid prize money of $120,150. However, the amount is a mere third of the prize money of the men’s singles winner. This has further brought the topic of the gender pay gap in tennis to the fore.

Andre Agassi’s former coach talks about the points disparity in tennis

Followers of the sport are aware of the gap in the prize money when it comes to certain tournaments. The gap has vanished for many championships, but it still exists in several. While ample attention is given to this disparity, a certain kind of difference flew under the radar for a long time. Brad Gilbert, who has joined the team of Coco Gauff, pointed out the difference.

Wonder 💭 why @atptour 250 is 250 to winner 500 is 500 1000 is 1000 very simple, on @WTA a 250 is 280 to winner a 500 is 470 to winner Coco last week and a 1000 is 900 to winner hmm 🤔,” he said.

Gilbert here is talking about the difference of points received for winning tournaments. In his tweet, he mentions the 470 points received by Gauff after winning the Citi Open, which is a 500 event. He is also referring to the 900 points which will be awarded to the winner of the Canadian Open, a WTA 1000 event.

While Gilbert talks about the gap in points, Andy Murray has opened up about the disparity in the Citi Open prize money.

Andy Murray is a champion of equal prize money in tennis and the Briton often speaks out about differences. The Citi Open prize money has an immense gap between the ATP and WTA divisions. The ATP prize pool is $2,013,940 while for the WTA it is $780,637. Murray spoke out about it and lauded the efforts of the WTA to close the difference.

As the organizations are working to make sure prize money is equal, many stars have also voiced their support for the move. Now, as pointed out by Gilbert, the points system needs to be worked on.
