WNBA player Zia Cooke makes Alexis Ohanian ponder the role of fashion in sports
As of now, men dominate the sporting realm. The popularity of men’s sports quite often overshadows that of women. However, there has been a change in this trend in recent years and with it, fashion is increasingly playing a role in sports too.
Noticing the stunning look pulled off by the WNBA star Zia Cooke, the entrepreneurial mind of Ohanian switched on. He thought about how women athletes play a more critical role than men when it comes to promoting fashion through sports. He stated, “I know this is gonna sound crazy, but maybe, just maybe, women & fashion Vibe in a way that just doesn’t happen with the male athletes.”

Cooke wore a stunning black dress with jeweled embroidery. Furthermore, he noted how women players are promoting a lot of new brands. He stated, “Lots of brands will come into sports that never have before because of the rise of the women’s game.”
If we have to take more examples of such female players, we don’t have to look away from Ohanian’s home. Serena Williams is tagged as the “fashion icon” of tennis.
Why was Serena Williams known as the “fashion icon” of tennis?
It was the year 2004 and Williams was gearing up for the US Open swing. Although she, along with her sister Venus Williams, had broken several stereotypes by this time, she still wanted to step up her outfit game. So she asked Nike to design an Andre Agassi-inspired denim outfit.

Nike delivered and Williams stepped on the court in a stunning denim skirt. According to her, contrary to popular belief, the material was comfortable to play in. Apart from that, her shoes that worked as boots before she played caught everyone’s eye. Such outlandishly creative thinking, when it comes to her fashion choices, made Williams the “fashion icon” of the tennis realm.
