Imprisoned in Russia for the Past 8 Months, Brittney Griner Receives Unconditional Support From American Tennis Icon – ‘Unlawfully Detained’

Since her retirement, the former world’s No. 1, Billie Jean King, has been quite active on her social media. King uses the online platform to raise her voice on various social and political issues. The American tennis legend previously spoke out about the American basketball player, Brittney Griner and her arrest in Russia.

Additionally, the Tennis legend recently expressed her feelings after she got to know that Griner spent her 32nd birthday in a Russian prison. Griner was detained in February in Moscow, and since then she has been away from her family.

Billie Jean King talked about WNBA star, Brittney Griner

It’s been 8 months since the American basketball star faced detainment in Moscow. Brittney Griner was detained for the possession of drugs when she entered the boundaries of Russia. However, it was later revealed that the WNBA star accidentally added those drug cartridges to her baggage, as she was in a hurry.

The 12 Grand Slam champion was not happy to see Griner in such circumstances as she spent her 32nd birthday in a prison. Billie Jean King further took to her social media, and stated, “Today, Brittney Griner turns 32. She will spend her birthday in a Russian prison, where she has been unlawfully detained for 8 months. Let’s continue to advocate for her release and bring her home. #WeAreBG”

The U.S. State Department stated that the American basketball player was ‘wrongfully detained.’ They further stated that the US government will make efforts for Griner’s release from the Russian prison.

Additionally, various campaigns have been launched by Griner’s family and friends to seek her release. A number of other basketball players and other athletes from different fields have come out to support the WNBA star. They have launched a campaign called #WeAreBG, and it is trending on social media.
