It is hard to imagine tennis without the legendary Serena Williams. The American tennis star has become a household name ever since she won her first Grand Slam title in 1999 as a 17-year-old. From then onwards, she has dominated women’s tennis, giving her opponents little breathing space. The younger Williams sister has gone on to become one of the most successful players the sport has ever seen.

Apart from her on-court achievements, the 40-year-old has dived into various business ventures and found success there too. Some of her successful business ventures include S by Serena, Serena Williams Jewelry, and many more. Recently, her VC firm ‘Serena Ventures’ raised $111 million as an inaugural fund. Further, the 23-time Grand Slam champion explained the aim behind starting this company.
Serena Williams looks to invest in diversity through her VC firm
The younger Williams sister was excited about the future of her Venture Capital company, Serena Ventures. Asked about the role of this firm, she said, “Our fund really impacts lives and companies in everyday life. So, what we try to invest in is companies that are really impacting everyday lives of everyday people. So that, kind of really broadens our spectrum of who we invest in. Also, it narrows down on who we do not invest in.”

Further, she added, “For us, it’s really about diversity and it’s not about us not investing in them, it’s just about not needing what our mission and what we want to invest in. I love investing and I started it because I was at a seminar and this woman was speaking about her lesson – 2% of all VC money went to women, even less went to people of color.”
